Toulon is the capital of Var. Its importance as a central port city for the Mediterranean coast was known back in the Roman Empire. Toulon is a permanent base for the French Navy, and the largest military port in France today, including the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. Toulon also served Napoleon as the port from which he embarked on his journey to Egypt. Josephine climbed the Royal Tower and waved goodbye to her husband to make sure he did indeed leave. I offer a fun tour of the Port and the Old City: We will walk along the port dock, discuss the history of the city, look at the famous statues in front of the town hall, continue to the National Museum of Marine. From there we will enter the Old City, look at the houses, fountains, tell stories, and present the previously vibrant figures of Toulon. At the end, when we got a little tired we will finish up in the local market with a local dish called "cade".
I’ve had a love affair with Provence for over 15 years. An avid traveler, writer and a historical researcher, my specialty is reconstituting micro-histories of buildings and houses. A digital marketing professional for the last 15 years, I decided to get off the computer and do what I loves doing since my college days – getting lost in culture, history, natural and urban beauty. I live in Provence, in an authentic village you’ve never heard of, Ollioules, with my two restless children and a badly scratched Peugeot.
The local market specialty - the cade !
We will visit the famous port where it all began! Then explore the colorful provencal market. Cutting into the old city we will visit a few key sites, including a church with incredible works of art, unappreciated by the average tourist. Then I will invite you to visit the must-see Marine Museum (entry fee not included) where I will guide and show you incredible artifacts.
