We will meet at a sculpting workshop, where local craftsmen create beautiful stone sculptures. We will take a walk up through the Red Hill Informal settlement, through the various camps of which it comprises. The settlement is on the edge of the Cape Point Nature Reserve, and we will visit the scenic lookout spots on our way. We will meet the local tradesmen, one of our mechanics, a lady running a vegetable garden who produces free range eggs to sell. We will end at my house, where you will meet my family and children and have a traditional African meal cooked on an open fire. Vegetarian, vegan or meat depending on your preference. My community is friendly, safe, and survives because we look out for each other. I will explain how my community can function, what problems it faces, and I think you will find it eye-opening the reality of how a majority of the people in Cape Town and South Africa actually live.
I have been hosting guests and giving authentic experiences for many organisations, such as Remote Year and Wild Corner Travel. I have created a lovely little home for my 4 children and love bringing guests home. They will be excited to meet you, and I don't think you will be disappointed by my cooking :). I work with foreign guests daily in the guest houses I manage. I get on easily with people and will happily show you the special atmosphere of my community where you will be welcomed as a special guest and not feel like an observer. In my community, I represent the Non-Profit Organisation Redhill Literacy and Feeding Scheme redhillnpo.co.za, which believes that education of the youth in our community is the only way to tackle the social issues around us, but at the same time that a child cannot learn on an empty stomach.
Morning tours will end with lunch at my house. Afternoon tours will end with dinner at my house.
Traditional alcoholic beverages can be organised as per request.
Located between Scarborough and Simon’s Town, Redhill is an informal settlement of approx. 400 makeshift households. Originally started in the 1980’s, Red Hill has remained a small population of around 1000 people, and consists of a black, coloured and mixed area of residents. We will visit all 4 camps located on a large hill with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Sun protection (hat, suscreen)
Redhill Settlement is a safe and friendly community, where many of the residents don't even lock their front doors. This gives a unique environment in which guests can relax and immerse themselves in the culture without any worries.
