Hula is an ancient Hawaiian art form that is practiced by both men and women in Hawai'i and around the world. For this special experience, you'll be invited into my private hālau (school) space where I regularly conduct hula classes and you'll be given a brief overview of the history of hula, learn some Hawaiian chant basics, simple hula steps, and the choreography to a popular hula standard (maybe two!). At the close of the experience, youʻll get to see the start of a real hālau class (normally open only to my students), which will emphasize the authenticity of the unique experience shared with you.
I began learning hula in a hālau setting at 3 years old and have been fortunate to study under some of Hawai'i's most respected hula masters. In 2006 I formally graduated as a Kumu Hula (Hula Instructor). Although I have reached the rank of Kumu, I still consider myself a student of this centuries-old art and I continue to expand and enrich my foundation so that I may it share with my students.
We are one of the fortunate halau (hula schools) to have our own place to call "home". Just minutes from Downtown Honolulu, in the heart of Kalihi, youʻll be chanting, dancing, and smiling in a space dedicated to the hula.
