When was the last time you walked a new path without your phone as a back-up to tell you where you are? In this short course, I will teach you how to properly orientate yourself in the woods when your battery dies - using nature, your watch, maps and a compass. Depending on the weather, we'll take a short round-trip in the forest and explore a few scouting techniques. There will be enough time for everyone to try out the methods and to ask more questions.
I am a nature-lover and a certified hiking, nature and landscape guide. I hold a Masters degree in Geography so I have a passion for maps and landscapes. When I'm outside walking, hiking or biking, I love to take a more detailed look at my surroundings and "read nature" to get the best feel for where I am.
A few compasses and maps. Please bring your own if you have one.
We will meet up at the "Haus der Natur" (house of nature, a nice interactive nature exhibition) near the Waldau game reserve (reachable by car or by bus - final stop Waldau). From there, we'll take a walk into the forest and the woods and practice some orienteering techniques. The walk ends again at Haus der Natur, which is worth a visit if you have some more time.
