Guests will be welcomed to the YWCA with a local drink by our host mum Isti and myself. Isti is also a beneficiary of the YWCA services and will share her background as a transnational family of six. Guests will be introduced to YWCA's work in providing community services for the needy. Guests will then enter the YWCA Kitchen and be briefed on the menu for the day. The class starts with a demonstration and hands-on making of a local appetiser by Isti, who will also share some heritage and personal anecdotes of all dishes and ingredients. Next, guests will have a fun hands-on experience of trying to cook the main dish, with tips and guidance from her. Cooking is done in intimate groups of 2 to 4 pax so you can get to know others. While the main dish is simmering, guests will then be treated to another demonstration of a local dessert that pairs well. When the food is ready, guests will get to enjoy the fruits of their labour by partaking in a shared meal. Isti will join them to answer any questions that they may have, and share more life stories and experiences of cooking, from another perspective of Singapore. At the close, feedback forms are provided so guests can share candidly about how the experience went. We will take a group photo to commemorate our time together. Guests are welcome to pack leftovers home and receive a small souvenir as thanks for your support.
As Singapore's oldest women's organisation, the YWCA has a rich heritage of helping and nurturing women in our community. From helping women become more self-reliant to archiving recipes that nourish the home and heart, YWCA has over 140 years of connecting with the community through food and good works. I'm a social worker at YWCA for 5 years involved in the development of cooking classes as a social enterprise project from an innovative pilot to a viable alternative for mums to provide for their families. I can share my knowledge of the social service sector in Singapore and its "hidden" poverty. Debra, our co-host, is a YWCA staff as well. Our host mum, Isti, is certified for food safety and hygiene and has years of experience cooking daily for her family of 6, for large festive family gatherings and started a home catering business

The YWCA of Singapore headquarters is nestled in Outram, neighbouring the vibrant heritage enclave of Tiong Bahru. Our open-air semi-professional kitchen is located on the compound & is a mixed-use space catering to medium-sized groups of up to 20 pax. It looks into our Hall where charity food rations are stored & pending delivery. We will be using the space to share our food culture & stories together in a warm & homely atmosphere.

You will be hosted by YWCA beneficiary mums whose first language may not be English so do speak simply and they will do their best to make you feel comfortable.
