We will take a leisurely paced walking tour though Barcelona Ciutat Vella which includes the oldest Neighbourhoods of the city: The Ribera and the Gothic Quarter. We will be looking at the history of the city as well as the cultural traditions of Catalonia, what they are passionate about: the human castles; the Devil's dances; bread rubbed with tomato; els caganers, the shitters, the fireworks, la casa pairal (family manor); el seny et la rauxa, the struggle between virtue and sin; la senyera, the Catalan flag, la enyorança (the longing) and FC Barcelona. As we progress through the city sights we will be able to answer all the following questions and many others: Did really Hercules found Barcelona? What is the Diada ? What’s the origin of the Catalan Flag? Why is Catalan language so different from Spanish? Did you know that the first known Barcelonian was called Caius Coelius? Why are there marijuana leaves on Colon’s column ? Are the scantily dressed ladies in Picasso Ladies d’ Avignon really french? Was the Eiffel tower going to be installed in Barcelona? How did Catalan language developed? Why the Eixample urban plan looks so peculiar? Why was the statue of Antonio Lopez, one of the De Medici of the xix century Barcelona removed?
I am a passionate historian and a proficient world traveler. After completing a Degree in History, I have traveled extensively around the globe. I have worked in 5 different countries and visited about 65. I have been engaged with the tourism Industry since I was a teenager: starting off in Italy Amalfi Coast, then on to London. I lived also in Dubai and France, although briefly, and also in Germany, Freiburg and Berlin. I am enthusiastic about hospitality, foreign cultures and languages (mastered 5) and have also traded in the entertainment business where my social skills, genuine friendliness and infectious enthusiasm made me to stand out. I always strive to provide the utmost experience. Barcelona has held a special place in my heart since spending 6 months on a Erasmus project. I am looking forward to show you the Great Enchantress.
