The Columbia River Gorge is huge--80 miles (130 km)--and waterfalls like the iconic Multnomah Falls burst from its steep rocky sides. With its Benson Bridge, this 620-foot falls is the most-visited tourist attraction in the Portland area, but we see this as only part of our small-group, five-hour hiking and scenery experience. We will spend all the time we need to hike (2-4 miles/3-7 km) and visit waterfalls, overlooks and vistas with rare and stunning beauty; beyond what you typically see, hidden spots that other tours pass by. We will meet at our shop in inner SE Portland, where we'll ride in our city-permitted Mercedes Sprinter vans to the nearby gorge. Here we'll hike to waterfalls and visit overlooks, selected by our guides to include both the most iconic, including the unmissable Multnomah, one of the most photographed waterfalls in the world, and the special. Depending on weather conditions, this could include a few small hidden waterfalls or another spectacular plunge-style falls whose columnar basalt has us learning words for "amazing" in other languages.
I'm Edwin, co-founder of Portland Urban Adventures, and together with partners & guides Sarah, Evan, and Jeri will host the experiences. I grew up in the Pacific NW, and have been exploring this beautiful, dramatic landscape my whole life. There is so much more to discover -- and I love discovering it with my guests. I'm a photographer, and together with my writer partners, we design these tours as a movable narrative. We have decades of experience guiding hiking, bicycling and scenic tours in the Columbia Gorge, as well as wilderness readiness training and education in the botany and geology of this place. We have taken the best parts of our 1000s of visits and applied it to what we do here. In the Gorge, we will visit can't-miss highlights -- like Multnomah Falls -- but we will also take you beyond. Transport by city-permitted Mercedes Sprinter vans
Our first stop in the Columbia River Gorge, 30 minutes outside Portland, is an expansive viewpoint. Our last stop is Multnomah Falls with its iconic Benson Bridge. Conditions permitting, we'l stop at the Vista House, what we call the "fancy bathroom," so there will be options for gift shops, coffee, and photographs. Each waterfall will include a short hike, so you may hike about three miles (5 km) in total.
Comfortable clothing for hiking, including shoes that can handle mud and uneven terrain
We will visit Multnomah Falls as part of the tour; this is the tallest waterfall in Oregon. Activity levels will be based on guest aptitude: but the more active we are, the better the experience can be for you!
