You'll learn about the history of Flushing and Queens as a borough of NYC from Becca, while starting out with an overview of Flushing as a gastronomic destination. Then, deep dive right in (hope you brought your appetite) with food and drink delights hailing from various parts of China and Taiwan, as Becca shows you local stops on side streets and markets. Start with epic savory and spicy Northeastern Chinese wontons, continue on for a delicious surprise in a Cantonese mainstay shop, stop by fruit vendors to learn about Chinese fruits, try Tianjin-style street foods at a street stall, visit a massive Pan-Asian supermarket to see a slew of live seafood, moving on to unique products like dumplings, meats, sauces, dried goods and tea, and finish with a special dessert at a famous bakery. You'll leave full, with new knowledge, new friends and the added value of having explored this outer-borough attraction of NYC.
Becca is a Queens, NY, native who loves sharing her hometown with travelers. Previously a Manhattan social nightlife tour guide with Hostelling International, Becca speaks Mandarin Chinese and spent 2.5 years living, studying and working in China and Hong Kong. She has traveled in 14 regions of China, adding to her expertise in learning about the flavors, cuisines, cultures and geographies of China, which is the main influence in Flushing's food scene. Becca finds that the best way for travelers to bond with their destination is through food, food vendors and walking tours, and she has fielded inspiration from food tours in Taipei and Mexico City. Becca also speaks Spanish, lending to giving her food walk in Spanish as well. Becca looks forward to meeting you and adding spice and flavor to your time in NY.
