From the earliest days of air travel and aviation; to the Roaring 20s; Hitler's delusions of a "World Capital Germania"; the airlift that saved West Berlin; and finally to the airport's present-day transformation into one of Berlin's most beloved public spaces, Tempelhofer Feld has always had a role to play in the hopes and dreams of people in the world's most experimental city. As we enter the 2020s and Berlin goes through yet another period of change and evolution, Tempelhof continues to be a flash point for modern conversations about gentrification, land use, urban development, and more. Our tour will explore each of the many faces of Tempelhof, and how they connect with the story of our beloved city. Starting out in our bike repair workshop on Flughafenstrasse in Neukölln, we'll discover this massive park in the middle of Berlin on bikes upcycled as part of an educational initiative with local youth. Visiting multiple corners of Tempelhof to talk about their connection to the park's past, present, and future, we will shine a light on the history of this legendary former airport while discussing some of its present-day uses and why it remains one of Berlin's most important hubs for social connection and innovation.
Hello! We are Yunus and Matt. We are two Tempelhof history guides who are passionate about "the Feld" and all that it represents. One of us is an original Berliner, and one of us came here in 2015 (can you guess which one??). Together we represent the Taschengeldfirma e.V, an educational NGO working on technology, social innovation, community-building, and environmental sustainability projects with Berlin youth. For more than 5 years Taschengeldfirma has been offering bike repair workshops and other educational programs from our home base in a self-powering shipping container located on the grounds of Tempelhof. We are deeply rooted in the Tempelhof community and invite you to join us to learn about the ongoing history of this airport-turned-urban oasis, and its importance within the modern-day life of Berlin.
Since 2010 Taschengeldfirma has been working with Berlin youth on educational projects in the field of bicycle technology, renewable energy and environmental sustainability. In 2017 we started a social business upcycling bikes and began working with local guides offering alternative tours of Berlin. All tours take place on "rescue bikes" upcycled in partnership with youth involved in our programs.
We'll provide bikes for the tour, all of which are upcycled as part of a social project with local youth in Neukölln! Afterw…
Bike helmets are available upon request! Let us know if you need a helmet and we can arrange this in advance.
We'll get on our bikes at Taschengeldfirma's bike workshop in Neukölln, and discuss a little about the neighborhood and the mission of our organization. We'll then ride a short way to Tempelhof and give an introduction to the park at our solar-powered shipping container next to the former airport runways. After a big tour of the park where we'll talk all about its history and role in present day Berlin, we'll finish up back at the bike shop.
Please come on time, dress for the weather and bring money for any snacks/drinks you might like during our tour route. If you'd like a bike helmet just let us know in advance and we can arrange it for you.
Tempelhof is entirely car-free, and the route there is on separated bike paths, so this experience is suitable even if you're not the most experienced urban cyclist. The route is flat, and we'll make a lot of stops, but guests should be prepared to be on a bike for up to 2 hours.
