Learn traditional techniques to decorate your own festive egg in this introductory workshop to Ukrainian Pysanky! After a historical and cultural background introduction your host will take you through all of the steps of creating your very own unique Ukrainian Easter Egg. The egg is decorated with designs in the technique known as "wax resist". Traditional symbols, designs and patterns are applied with melted beeswax using a tool called a kistka; eggs are then dipped into successively darker dye baths. At the end of the process, the beeswax is melted off to reveal a dazzling display of colour. All materials are included. In addition you will be fully immersed into a Ukrainian culture with traditional Ukrainian music played in the background, poppy seed cake being served with herbal tea and maybe even learn a few new words in Ukrainian language.
Ukrainian born and raised, I am passionate about my small country's cultural heritage. I was fortunate to learn the fascinating old fashioned technique of Ukrainian Egg Painting art from my grandmother (my dear baba). It is truly unique, captivating and mesmerizing and have been my passion for many years. From my kid's elementary school presentations to Birthday parties and Family get togethers: this activity is my happy world and I hope will be yours too.
