For this uniquely South African experience, I'll meet you at your Cape Town accommodation in the morning and we'll drive out of the city through beautiful countryside to the Cederberg Mountain Conservancy (Transport by car thru Coach Connections 021 559 7000.) We'll walk an easy, flat 4-5km riverside wilderness trail (or optional shorter trail) to explore and view a magnificent series of San bushman rock painting sites that are several thousand years old. You'll see a variety of paintings including sacred eland, human figures, elephant, therianthropes (half human half animal figures), and much more. Part archaeology, part wilderness experience, part art history - you'll learn about the world of the hunter-gatherer San people (the first Homo sapiens on Earth whose history here goes back 100,000 years) and their unique and awe-inspiring rock paintings. It is a truly wonderful experience to see these paintings in the rock shelters and wilderness environment in which they lived and painted. On the drive back we'll stop at a countryside restaurant for an authentic South African light lunch and you'll be back in the city by evening.
I'm the founder of Cape Town Outside - specializing in guided, off-the-beaten path day trips from Cape Town. I'm also a South African journalist, photographer and have spent years exploring the stone-age San bushman rock paintings of southern Africa. These ancient, finely painted, intriguing paintings are a national treasure and are part of an artistic tradition spanning more than 20,000 years in southern Africa. I'll show you some of this awesome art on a wilderness trail in the Cederberg mountain bio conservancy outside Cape Town - a special place of unspoiled rich biodiversity and once home to the San bushmen where they lived and painted for thousands of years. This is a day trip. I also do a two-day adventure. Look out for it on Airbnb Experiences.

We'll drive north out of Cape Town through farming country to the breathtaking Cederberg Mountain Conservancy. This unique bio reserve has many endemic plants and animals, unusual weathered red rock formations and a rich concentration of stone-age San rock paintings. The San hunter-gatherers inhabited southern Africa for millennia. Their intriguing rock art remains as heritage to their way of living with nature.
