This is the only cooking class in Lisbon where you get to learn about pastry making inside a real award-winning Portuguese bakery! The class starts with an introduction to the history of Pastel de Nata as well as the family-run bakery where this workshop takes place. While we talk, you will also get to try other traditional pastries João's bakery is famous for. After you've geared up, you'll go inside the kitchen of João's very own "pastelaria". This is where you will learn how to bake the irresistible Portuguese Custard Tarts (aka Pastel de Nata / Egg Tarts) everybody loves! Unlike other Pastel de Nata classes in town, we will show you how to make puff pastry like the pros. Afterwards, we will make the custard from scratch and bake it all inside a professional oven. During this class we all work together as a team. Everyone will get to make at least 3 tarts by hand - spread the dough with a specific Pastel de Nata technique, fill in the custard, etc. The end result will be a collaborative effort. A delicious one, of course! ;) In the end, we'll eat the warm tarts with coffee, tea, Port wine or sour cherry liqueur! * ADULTS & CHILDREN welcome! NO previous cooking experience required! I'm Zara, a Portuguese food writer. I got fed up seeing tourists in my city pay big bucks for cooking classes that aren't always representative of our food culture. That's why I've teamed up with my friend João, who is a 5th generation baker, to share this experience with you! João grew up in the hospitality business. At 13 years of age, João decided to embrace the family tradition of baking treats. Now, he owns his own bakery and has just won the award for 3rd Best Pastel de Nata in Lisbon! He will be the one welcoming you into his bakery and teaching you how to make Pastel de Nata at home! NOTE: Occasionally this experience is hosted by Manuel, João's cousin, and fellow Pastry Chef at our bakery - Pastelaria Batalha.
