Are you an aspiring writer? Would you like to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your storytelling while visiting New Orleans, the most literary and evocative city in the USA? Be inspired by your time here, as we meet in the French Quarter, the iconic heartbeat of the city that inspired generations of writers, from William Faulkner to Tennessee Williams to Anne Rice.

Whether you need help with the start of your novel, if your short story needs fine tuned, or maybe you just enjoy the craft of writing, I can help you improve, sharpen and strengthen your skills in a focused one-on-one setting.

We will meet in a coffee shop frequented by the locals, and I will buy you a beverage to enjoy while I read your writing. Then I will give you honest but constructive feedback, and my professional critique will explain what you did right, what you did wrong, and most importantly, how it can be improved.

Give me a complete tale, a small part of a story, or simply stream-of-consciousness musings. Bring your writing with you or email me in advance - you decide the amount of time I spend on reading versus critiquing, and you ask the questions you want answered.

I'm originally from Northern Ireland but have lived in New Orleans since 2004. I've written two books, one for the biggest publisher in the South and the other commissioned by a New York publisher. Both were critically acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic and I won a Tennessee Williams / New Orleans Literary Festival writers’ award. I've taught fiction-writing courses in New Orleans for eight years, firstly at Loyola University's Walker Percy Center, and for the last four years I have ran my own writing classes. At least six of my students have gone onto become published authors.

體驗地點

My default meeting place is a locals' coffee shop away from the tourist hordes on Bourbon Street. It is busy enough to have an energy, but rarely too packed to find seating. HOWEVER PLEASE NOTE - I am happy to come to you if you prefer. Want to meet outdoors in Jackson Square, or overlooking the Mississippi? Want me to come to your Uptown airbnb or your CBD hotel lobby? As long as you are staying in the city, I can bring the experience to you.

My experience with Stephen was great. He graciously accommodated my last minute booking from the previous evening and worked through technical issues I had with my last submission for review. He was on time for our meeting, friendly, and organized. We reviewed a hard copy of my work line by line, which already had Stephen's markup and notes, and I felt the feedback was honest and accurate. He pointed out where my strengths and opportunities are in his notes and in our dialogue. The hour seemed to fly by for me, but in the end I had new perspective on my writing and renewed motivation to finish my story. If you're an aspiring writer, or wonder if you're a writer at all, I recommend that you take a step and find out here.

I booked Stephen’s other experience, and enjoyed it so much I did this one as well. He is a first-class teacher and gave me excellent feedback and advice. Highly recommended.

Perfect. Valuable assistance delivered knowledgeably, clearly and efficiently. The first meeting was so helpful that I booked another to receive a critique for a different style of writing. Pay attention and Stephen will make you a better writer.

I didn't know what to expect going into this, and I was pleasantly surprised! But before getting into the experience itself, I have to say that Stephen was very accommodating with some scheduling issues I had, and adjusted our meeting without any problem. As for the meeting itself, I was very pleased with how he oriented the session. He was professional, open to hearing me out, and gave detailed and useful feedback. You can tell he's a professor; he's got contextual examples to help clarify his suggestions out the wazoo! I really appreciate his time and feel like I could reach out to him for further clarifications in the future. If you're stuck, or can't get out of your own head and need a fresh take, I highly suggest meeting with Stephen! It's a unique experience you can throw in to your Nola visit that's not alcohol related ;)

I have been struggling with writing in general for quite a while. I need help with organizing my ideas and plotting. He was flexible and worked with me on the areas that I needed. He was easy to talk to and understood what my concerns and blockades were. He is a great teacher and I highly recommend this experience!

Stephen is knowledgeable, but he provides feedback that doesn't take the artist’s vision into account. The session reinforces the box one should stay in and eschews the idea that coloring outside the lines could ever have an appeal. He would be a good instructor for beginners and the artist with a shared perspective. But I imagine if Stephen taught art instead of writing and Leonardo, Vermeer, Seurat, Munch, and Magritte were his pupils he would insist they only use one brush stroke and color palette because Stephen seems incapable of entertaining a point of view that is not his own. He'll give lip service to understanding your audience and following your heart, but then everything that comes afterward cancels that message out. It’s a shame. I had been so excited about this meeting. All I wanted was for him to enter the world I was creating and meet me half way. I had advised him that I was writing for a very specific audience, one that was not like him at all. It was obvious the subject matter was boring to him, but that shouldn’t matter. I felt like a Driver’s Ed student trying to learn how to drive a stick shift and only being allowed to stay in first gear because the instructor had hoped for an automatic. The feedback was mostly commenting about commas, hyphens and the most hackneyed 8th-grade blueprint for pedestrian storytelling. When I pushed back on something he said, I was simply trying to explore the idea out loud and come to terms with it. In reaction, however, his words became quick and clipped and his tone condescending like people who do not like their authority challenged for a sentence or two until he recalibrated to a more genteel place. I did find much of the feedback useful, but he wouldn’t talk it out with me in a way that I could start to see how to reframe the approach I was using. He just seemed alternately annoyed and patronizing and I think we were both happy to have the session end. Also, although his offer gives general notice about preferred word count it seems flexible. My story was about 4 times longer than he would like. I didn't want to send a piece of a story, I wanted feedback on the entire arc. He was very put out about the extra drain on his time. We agreed to cut our meeting time to 45 minutes to accommodate the extra time it would take him to read it, but by his comments, I don’t think he did more than skim in some places as the feedback he suggested was often actually incorporated in the story. I was not trying to take advantage of the situation. I would have happily doubled or tripled the normal fee for the session; money wasn’t a factor. I do think his skills as an editor are outstanding and I had inquired about having him look at some other work in the series for whatever fee he deemed appropriate. Instead, I received a generic reply with a tepid mention of editing possibilities and no stated fee or range. I'm a business person I have to take that as disinterest. And that's fine, this was enough to whet my appetite. I'll explore other options. Overall, it’s a fun thing to do. I tried to write a fair assessment of my experience, but I am not trying to discourage others from the activity. Stephen is cordial and well-intended. The city is magical. The area where you meet is bustling with activity. The coffee is good. Stephen is prompt and prepared with written notes. I hope that you will leave inspired.

I suggest you provide about 1,500 words (probably six pages) for me to critique. I think that is enough to discern your strengths and weaknesses, but you are welcome to give me more or less.
