活動內容

A walk through Congo Square and the Historic Faubourg Treme culminating in a talk at my studio about Hoodoo, Voodoo, Black Carnival Traditions, the deeds and misdeeds of my own Louisiana Creole ancestors and other lesser known aspects of New Orleans history and culture. In my studio rum bar you will enjoy coffee, rum and a chance to check out my art and black masking Indian attire. My house has long been a place where friends come to ground themselves in the cultural vibration of the city. I am so excited to now share this experience with you!
Other things to note
While the majority of my presentation will be at my studio, we will also walk six blocks and stand in one place for long periods. Please wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated because the heat can be oppressive, especially in the summer. BTW - NO PHOTOS of my studio or myself are allowed, thank U.

I'm an artist and 12th-generation Afro-Creole. My family fled Louisiana in 1970 to escape racial oppression. I returned 15 years ago to reconnect with the land of my ancestors. I make art with wood salvaged from my Katrina-damaged home in Treme, and mask as a Medicine Man in the Black Masking Indian tradition. My art is in the permanent collection of the American Folk Art Museum and in the homes of art-lovers worldwide.

體驗地點

The experience takes place roughly an hour in the park and an hour at my studio, which is seldom open to the public. After Hurricane Katrina, I converted former slave quarters into an art studio, Hoodoo shop, and guest rooms.

Marcel is a great storyteller and amazingly talented person. We were given very interesting, funny, and memorable information. The statues in the park are phenomenal. Over-all, we enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this experience as you could tell it was very authentic. This experience ties in a lot of cultural, racial, and, geographical history that made my trip even more meaningful. If you're a person rooted in white supremacy or are very closed minded - this is not the tour for you; but if you'd like an real- world, Afrocentric, off-beat, informative tour with an artistic flare then this is a MUST! The way Jean-Marcel ties in personal stories with larger historical themes really helped me connect to the subject matter in a more meaningful way. I found myself constantly jotting notes in my phone so I'd remember to study numerous things he spoke about during the tour. I will definitely do another experience with him next time I'm in town and highly recommend that you do the same!

Jean-marcel is the best guy in New Orleans to tell you about the history of the city. He’s not just a tour guide he’s apart of that city itself so it’s the best “tour guide” you’re going to find
