Handmade bookbinding using traditional silk kimono fabric is a coveted craft that results in a beautiful original functional work of art. Most book binding shops have turned into automated factories. Tsutomu, a master bookbinder, has run his authentic hand-made bookbinding studio for over 55 years ago. Every step of the process has meaning, making it an artistic and meditational experience. I'm Yoko assistant of my father's studio. He is a great craftsman. I support him and act as an interpreter to visitors in this one of a kind experience for anyone who wants to feel real local culture !
Small studio on the ground floor of our four-storied family house. Located in the Kitano Hakubaicho district, one of the 4 original geisha entertainment areas, in the shadow of the Golden Temple. Pretty flowers welcome you into our antique bookbinding studio.
