This is an exploration of Historical Charleston from the perspective of the founding mothers and women of every color who contributed to our Great American Dream. We will visit the homes and shops of the women who built this great city. We will hear their stories in the contemporary voice of their times. Together, we will smash the myth of the "Fainting Southern Belle", the "Woman behind the man", and Chattel Slavery. Our exploration begins at the alleged execution site of America's First Female Serial Killer. We will stand in the spot where she met her fate and hear her story. Then you get to decide, was she really a serial killer or a woman protecting her rights! Next, we will visit the homes and sites of "the Old Maids", Suffragettes, Printers, Artisans, Madams, Shop Keepers, and Plantation owners, discovering their contributions and conundrums, all written over by modern history. Together, we will roll back time and see the world from perspective of the women of history. Along the way, you will discovery the beautiful truth, Charleston is the matriarchal capital of the western world, a city once owned and controlled by women.
After decades in the financial industry and a stint in academia, 9 years ago, I became a licensed Charleston Tour Guide and 6 years ago an independent operator. I am your Ambassador to a greater understanding and a good time. Once a walking guide, a ghost tour guide, and for 2 years, one of the city's most requested Carriage Drivers, today, I am a writer, a storyteller, and a social activist on the lookout for the hidden messages, overlooked events, and heartfelt meaning of the world around us, dedicating myself to sharing stories of empowerment: The stories of the Strong Women of the South.
We will start in historic district 3, exploring around the old city jail and some of the grandest palaces still standing in the city. Next, we will move into historic district 2, the shops and bordellos of the old city. If the group has the will, the stamina, and the fortitude, we will travel on to historic district 1, where the palaces and water front shops of the old world meet in historical Charleston Harbor.
The tour lasts between 90 minutes and 2 hours. Food, drink, and transportation are not included, but refreshment stops will be made along the way.
