The Met is a gigantic museum. It's easy to become overwhelmed and lost trying to navigate the over 400 galleries within the museum (even with a map). But relax. I'll use my experience to deftly guide you and an intimate sized group through 5 of The Met’s most popular curatorial departments plus 1 to 2 of its lesser traveled departments — all within 2 hours. Along the way, we’ll stop to observe approximately 25 highlights from among the over 53,000 artworks on display in the museum. Through these world-class examples of painting, sculpture, decorative objects, and architecture, I’ll illustrate how art has evolved across time and cultures. By the end, you’ll have gained a foundation of art history knowledge. You’re then welcome to continue exploring The Met on your own or move on with your day. NOTE: This is like the half marathon version of my “Grand Tour of The Met w/ a NYC Artist” for people who either don’t have the time or attention span for a 3.5-hour tour. However, if you're interested in the longer tour, learn more about it here: https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/394206
Ever since I moved to NYC in 1985 to earn my art degree at Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute, I’ve been visiting The Met. Over the years, I’ve become a member of the museum and intimately learned both its floor plan and collection. Art at The Met has often inspired my own artwork, including many vignettes in the “Teen Wolf Bestiary” that I illustrated for MTV. Now with this experience, I’m combining two of my favorite activities: walking and exploring The Met’s collection.
Admission ticket to The Met (allowing you to skip the long ticket lines)
Founded in 1870, The Met is an encyclopedic museum displaying over 5,000 years of art from around the world. The museum’s floor plan covers more than 2,000,000 square feet (and even that’s not enough space to display The Met’s entire collection of artwork). During this experience, we’ll explore 5–7 departments in the museum to discover both shining stars and hidden gems from the collection.
The duration of this tour is between 1.5 to 2 hours. We will walk at a moderate pace and take a short break towards the middle. I will be available for questions during the break and after the tour.
