We will meet at Chelsea Piers on Manhattan's West Side and board a luxury 40' Jeanneau sailboat named Mana.
On the dock, I will explain some of the basics of sailing. Upon departure, you will have an opportunity to raise the sails and steer the boat as I explain the science and history of sailing and how people on sailboats established New York and shaped the future of America.
With my guidance, you will trim the sails and point the boat to the Statue of Liberty. On the way, we will observe modern Lower Manhattan and Governors Island while looking for reminders of the original Dutch Colony. Upon our return to the dock, you will understand the science of sail and appreciate how New York is more than just a city, but an archipelago, whose geography made it the perfect place for sailors to build an empire.

Bring your own camera, additional beverages, additional snacks, a full meal (if you'd like), smiles. In the event of inclement weather, host may reschedule or cancel if needed.

I first came to New York from New Hampshire in the 1990s and I remember feeling the same inspiration and wonder as when I first sailed about 20 years ago. Now obsessed with both, I am a US-Coast Guard Certified Master Mariner and American Sailing Association Instructor. Additionally, I'm a New York City School Teacher and Former US Marine with a passion for sharing knowledge.

We will meet on the West Side of Manhattan and Houston Street. Upon my 33 foot sloop, Sinbad, we will explore the New York Harbor from the Financial District to Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and Governor's Island.

I highly recommend this experience. Matt is very well qualified to take non-sailors,or highly experienced sailors, out onto the Hudson and East Rivers. He judged the weather and adjusted the trip accordingly, his main concern being the safety of his passengers. It was a superb experience that added to our overall amazing memories of NY.
