活動內容

Hear about the history and culture that makes Berkeley one of the most famous cities in the world. We'll stroll safely through campus and the surrounding areas. This activity is 100% outdoors, and attendance is limited so it's easy for everyone to keep at a safe distance from one another. We'll meet just outside the Paris Baguette Cafe at 2150 Shattuck Avenue just next to the downtown Berkeley BART station. We'll learn about Berkeley's downtown area, then cross through UC Berkeley's campus alongside tree-lined Strawberry Creek. We'll pass by the Free Speech Cafe and talk about Berkeley's protests. Finally, we'll walk the historic route from Sproul Plaza to People's Park. Afterward you can shop for one-of-a-kind jewelry and t-shirts on Telegraph Avenue. A number of restaurants are now open, so you can grab some lunch.

Other things to note:

This is a history-focused tour, but the topics we cover during our walk are flexible based on everyone's interests. Please be sure to tell Pam what topics you are most interested in and she can also adjust at any point in the tour based on the questions and topics that guests bring up as we stroll from downtown Berkeley to People's Park.

Please wear comfortable walking shoes. I also recommend sunscreen and cash for refreshments and street artists. There are lots of great options for lunch and activities after the tour.

Hi! I'm Pam and I've lived in Berkeley since 1985. My guidebook to Berkeley will be in bookstores soon. I have a Bachelor's in Political Economy from UC Berkeley, and a Master's in California and Local History. I've worked on the UC Berkeley campus since 1999. Currently I'm career counselor, and my past jobs were in admissions, student life, and international advising. I love discussions about politics, culture, economics, alternative lifestyles, and international issues. I'm excited to meet you and introduce you to one of the most exciting cities in the world!

The tour with Pamela was super informative! Despite living around the bay for many years, I learned a lot about Berkley's history, culture, and social movements. We did walk around the campus and Pamela was super knowledgeable. Highly recommended!

Pamela exceeded every expectation I had about this tour, before the tour even started, by choosing the perfect place to meet, a great coffee shop/deli called 'Paris Baguette', which sold incredibly delicious freshly made sandwiches and pastries for people to grab on the go and with plenty of sitting area and clean bathrooms to use before we started walking. It's immediately up the stairs from the BART train station. Pamela is very pleasant, extremely knowledgeable, so friendly... and as if that wasn't enough, she's also funny. She made our tour very entertaining and interactive. Her story telling skills transported my mind to so many different times in the history of not only this university campus, but also the entire city of Berkeley and surrounding areas. Our group was the perfect size and more importantly, great quality of people, a total of 5 including Pamela, which was ideal for her to provide a more personalized experience. Everyone was very pleasant, to the point that we shared our contact info to start new friendships. We even went for lunch and drinks after the tour. It was worth every dollar I paid and I would do it again if I go back to Berkeley with friends and family. Thank you Pamela, for being out of the ordinary. Nabil

COVID precautions: I booked in early August 2021 for a group of 3 and 5 other folx in separate parties/pods also booked at that time. Everyone was vaccinated, wore masks the entire time, and kept a distance, although Pamela (tour guide) occasionally unmasked for clarity while speaking but also stepped back a further distance from the rest of the group at those moments. Note that students hadn’t really returned to campus at this point, so it was fairly easy to stay away from other groups of people, but there were occasional narrow pathways with groups bypassing ours. About the experience: Really lovely informative walk about the history of Berkeley as a community and specifically as a higher education institution. It’s clear Pamela both loves the place and is cognizant of the deep social justice challenges from the colonial background and native land it is built on to freedom of speech / protests in history to the eucalyptus tree bark and more. I especially enjoyed seeing the history mural at the end to tie it all together. Tips: Expect a 2.5-3hour walk/tour with some breaks/stops. We started a bit late as people arrived at staggered times and were also grabbing food from the meet-up location (Paris Baguette), which is also the only bathroom stop during the trip so do make time for that if needed. There’s slow walking over urban area with occasional trail-like places and it’s fairly continuous walking over flat land (paved and unpaved) except when Pamela stops to explain a point of interest and then there’s a lot of standing (or sitting depending on the location). You may want a light jacket depending on weather and also would recommend a water bottle and a snack (or get some food/water at Paris Baguette). My group took photos throughout without issues.
