Galway Trad Tour combines music and history, so that you can enjoy and experience Irish traditional music as we walk around the charming streets and river paths of Galway. This unique walking tour will begin in Eyre Square and as we walk to the Docks, Spanish Arch, Courthouse Square, Cathedral and other places of historic interest, you will hear Irish music being played on the fiddle relating to that place. For instance in the Docks you will hear a fiddle tune associated with Liverpool or the US as these were typically the most important ports of call from Galway a century ago. During Galway Trad Tour, there will also be a chance for you to sing along with a Ballad so that everyone gets to participate and have the 'craic'. You might even like to request a tune at some stage of the tour, which I would be more than happy to play if I know it. At the end of the trip I also offer any information relating to tunes I've played, local sessions, festivals or upcoming events.
I am a professional musician and tour guide from Galway. I have spent over 25 years playing traditional Irish music in shows, competitions, and local sessions. I have a degree in Music from University College Cork and have a masters in Music Technology from the University of York. I have always had a strong interest in local history and I have done walking, open top and private tours for groups or companies looking for a humorous, quality tour from an experienced local guide. During this walking tour I will combine all of these elements to give you a unique and memorable experience.
Throughout the tour, as we laugh and navigate our way through the streets, canals and historical sites of Galway you will hear various tune types such as jig, slip jig, reel, waltz, march, hornpipe and slow air. This will give you a feel for the different tones, tempos and rhythms associated with Irish traditional music as you get an insight into Galway's past.
