In this fun, hands-on workshop you will actually roast a small batch of coffee. Our introduction to home roasting begins with a look at several popular coffee roasting methods, noting their strengths & challenges. Next, we examine the roasting process itself by showing examples of the coffee bean as it progresses through its roasting journey. Observing a demonstration roast brings the process to life and prepares you for the next step. In this segment, I will guide you through the steps you will be taking as you roast coffee using a hand-held roaster over a gas stove. Everyone will leave with their personally roasted coffee plus an additional bag of green coffee beans to roast at home. Now that you are an accomplished coffee roaster you may find it very easy to get started in home roasting because many people already have the equipment in their homes or can acquire roasting tools for a few dollars. New for 2020 - Coffee roasting starter kits are available at an additional charge.
My name is Dan and I am a coffee enthusiast and have been a home coffee roaster for over 15 years. It all started when my favorite coffee shop was bought by a giant coffee chain and my delicious morning brew just disappeared. Sadly, I could not find another cup of coffee that suited my tastes, so I began roasting and brewing my own coffee. As a self-taught roaster, I enhanced my coffee knowledge with the education programs offered by the Specialty Coffee Association and became an SCA-certified roaster. I enjoy meeting coffee enthusiasts and sharing the many roasting methods I have used from a cast-iron skillet to a commercial-style drum roaster.

This experience is hosted in my home studio overlooking the rolling hills of the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed area. During winter and spring, we will likely roast indoors, and while the ventilation is good there may be some residual smoke and aroma of roasted coffee. With warmer weather, we roast outdoors and enjoy the wonderful views.
