In an upbeat and interactive walking tour, we'll explore the southern tip of Manhattan (originally known as "Mannahatta" by the Lenape natives living here), allowing you to learn about the unique history of the city. Starting at the National Archives, we'll walk and drink our way through the area, learning the history of settlement on what writer, Russell Shorto, has dubbed "The Island at the Center of the World." You'll learn about early relations with Native Americans, the fabled $24 Purchase, the transition from New Netherland to New York, and finally, about the American Revolution on the Hudson. We'll start at the National Archives, followed by a few stops at some smaller landmarks. Next, we'll make our way to Pier A, where you can take in the views of Upper New York Bay and the Statue of Liberty over a drink. After that, we'll continue walking to see some more artwork and monuments. We'll stop in at a hidden beer garden in Battery Park, followed by one of New York's oldest bars in which our first president gave a famous speech.
I am a native New Yorker and have always had a love for learning the history of this city. Additionally, I've been a teacher in Manhattan for the past seven years, focusing primarily on American history. Over the past few years, I've had the fortune of traveling to many countries, where I fell in love with walking tours and how amazing those experiences could be, so I wanted to be able to bring that same opportunity to fellow travelers when they come to New York. My goal is to share my knowledge of the sights and history of this amazing city, while adding a fun twist to the typical tourist experience.
I will provide one drink to each participant throughout the tour.
I'll have photos and maps to help contextualize what participants will be learning about throughout the tour.
We'll walk through Battery Park and some of the surrounding streets, taking in sights of historic New York architecture.
Comfortable shoes, raincoat (if necessary), money for drinks.
This is a 2.5 hour experience, so please wear comfortable shoes. Additionally, please prepare for inclement weather; we will try to do the tour unless the weather turns particularly bad. I'll provide one drink on the tour, but please bring extra money in case you want to purchase anything else.
