Our walking tour will explore the city center, more specifically the areas of Cedofeita and Bonfim. The meeting point is a feminist bookshop, where we will meet and share a brief introduction about the women's movement in Porto. From there we will start our walk, searching for hidden pieces of evidence of the female presence in the city's streets. Toponymic, public sculptures and street art are some of the physical testimonies we will find, but many of the important characters in this feminist version of history were left completely invisible. We will share with you many interesting stories about women that made history - writers, queens, intellectuals, activists, and, sadly, victims of the unequal world we live in. At the end of our walk, feel free to ask us suggestions of other places to visit in Porto. We're happy to help!
Hi! I'm Laurem, and together with Isabeli and Alicia we run a women's collective named MAAD - Mulheres, Arquitetura, Arte & Design. Our interdisciplinary approach aims to highlight the sexism that permeates the urban culture. With this tour, we propose a new narrative to the traditional history of Porto! A bit about each of us: Laurem: My background is in Fine Arts (BA) and Curatorial Studies (MA), and for the past 3 years I've been working as a tour guide in Porto. Isabeli: My academic background is in Art History and Curatorship. Transdisciplinary collective artistics practices with a deep focus in gender studies is my thing. Alicia: I've studied Architecture and Urbanism and have a Masters in Art and Design for Public Space. Currently, I'm working on my PhD research on walking as an artistic practice.
Take home a cool souvenir made by us!
We will start with a visit to a feminist bookshop, a place not only focused on books but a gathering point for anyone interested on the theme. While we walk, we will talk about the streets and statues named after women - who they are and what they did for the city. We will also check an old jail, the Fine Arts school and pay a visit to a cemetery! Our tour ends in a special place were we will pay homenage to a forgoten victim.
This tour involves a moderate amount of walk - around 3.5 km. We'll walk at a slow pace but don't forget to use comfortable shoes and dress according to the weather. Bring your water bottle too!
