Get your taste buds ready for the ride because there is nothing quite like Northern Thai cuisine. I limit my daily small-group street food tour to just 8 exclusive guests each evening to provide a more intimate atmosphere. Over the course of the evening, we’ll bounce between 5-6 different spots into the city to try more than 15 different drinks, snacks and dishes. We’ll kick off at 5pm with your fellow guests and delve into the history and eating culture in Northern Thailand. We’ll start with a plate of khao kha moo (braised pork in five spices) at a vendor once visited by Anthony Bourdain before hopping in our private songthew truck to head off to one of the best food markets in Thailand. Here we’ll eat different Thai snacks and learn about the ingredients that go into making the dishes. You simply can’t visit Northern Thailand within trying the herby larb, sticky gaeng hang lay curry and sai oua sausage. Nor can you skip the tea and tamarind leaf salads brought in during the 2 centuries of Burmese rule or the nam prik pastes. We’ll also visit Chiang Mai’s Chinatown where you’ll try herby nam ngiaw noodles and other local snacks. Sign off with silken tofu ginger soup. Please note: this tour isn't suitable for those with don't eat pork, vegetarians and vegans. Lactose intolerance can be accommodated, as can gluten intolerance if soy sauce can be consumed.
I've been a TAT licensed Thai tour guide for longer than I can remember, but my passion is Thai street food. My 4-hour small-group street food tour has won the 2019 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. What many foreigners don't understand is Thai cuisine is highly regional. On my daily 4-hour street food tour, I'll take you to street food stalls and hole-in-the-wall eateries known only to locals where you'll get to grips with what Northern Thai food is all about.
More than 15 different drink, snack and dish tastings
Bottled water and Thai drinks
Ride around in a private local songteaw truck (please note that pick up and drop off isn't included)
We'll start with a plate of khao kha moo (brasied pork in five spice) and learn about the vendors interesting history. Then visit a Thai market to learn about ingredients and try snacks. After we'll visit a small eatery to try different Burmese-influenced dishes before eating at my favorite larb joint. Try different dishes and snacks in Chiang Mai's Chinatown before finishing with a Thai dessert. Come with an empty stomach!
