We will meet at the Brooklyn Bridge's Manhattan tower. I'll briefly introduce myself and explain how I wound up sharing my family's stories before I launch into this unique, dinner table-learned version of the bridge's history. As we explore the bridge's nooks and crannies, I will share little known family lore and historic items. You will have the opportunity to discover and photograph these rarely seen items from the stunning vantage point of the bridge which gave them historic significance. Afterwards, we will head down to explore the unique neighborhood which surrounds the Brooklyn Bridge, and to grab a coffee/tea/soda/etc at one of my favorite local cafes (I live in this neighborhood, so I know the best cafes). There we can just relax and catch up.
I am a lifelong New Yorker and the great, great grandson of Washington and Emily Roebling, the builders of the Brooklyn Bridge. I have spent my entire life steeped in family lore and history, and so have a unique perspective on the amazing story of my family and the bridge that they built. I love to share my passion for bringing this story to life, and try to provide an immediacy to my storytelling by sharing previously untold family tales, insights and historic family artifacts which elucidate our vital connection to this past (most of these items I allow people to handle, have their picture taken with etc.). I have a long history of sharing my stories. I've spoken publicly at numerous institutions over the years, and have been featured in the New York Times, on BBC Radio, The History Channel, etc.
We will be visiting various points of interest on and around the Brooklyn Bridge (focusing on points that might otherwise go unnoticed), then we'll explore the surrounding neighborhood before visiting a local cafe.
When trying to find me upon arrival, I will be the person carrying the black luggage! Try to find me before the designated start time, as I turn off my phone once we start walking.
