We will cover three art communities in our trip, experiencing three different perspectives in Cuban art nowadays: Afrocuban religion, a world famous artist and an unknown but amazing art community called “Muraleando”. We will start in “Callejon de Hamel”: a haven for Afrocuban culture where singers, drums and street art tell you about the history of this popular religion in Cuba. Then we will jump into a 50’s vintage car to visit “Fusterlandia”, the most famous art community in Havana, created by world known artist José Fuster who has improved the surroundings of what used to be a small and poor fishermen’s village. Our final stop will be in “Muraleando”, a National Culture Award Community Project where every piece of art was handmade from garbage collected by the neighbors in the very same place where “Muraleando” stands today. We will meet one of the co-founders of the project and amateur artists (all of them neighbors as well) that will play live Cuban music for us at the time that we enjoy a refreshing non-alcoholic cocktail. More than just an artistic tour, you will have the chance to interact directly with Cuban people living in these neighborhoods and see Cuban daily life away from the touristic highlights of Havana’s historical center. We will also provide you with useful info and tips for your stay in Cuba. We will give you a surprise present at the end of our tour!
I am Ana Rojas and I graduated in college as a Society and Culture expert. I have been working in tourism for more than 6 years, two fields apparently disconnected that have given me a meaningful and authentic perspective of what a community project and Cuban Culture are. “Fusterlandia”, the most famous art community in Havana. “Callejon de Hamel”, where Afrocuban culture meets popular art; and “Muraleando”, one of the most miraculous community projects where twenty years ago garbage was turned into art. All these cultural projects inspire children, adults and senior citizens to share their talent with others...get ready to see a lot of “ugly” turned into “beautiful”.
