Quiet wooded lakeside community with with beautiful beach and lake access.

Welcome, Spring!

Northern Michigan’s spring thaw brings with it new life: purple crocuses and buttery yellow daffodils push up through soft black earth, gentle spring breezes blow off the now-thawed lakes, and millions of cherry trees explode with tiny white blossoms. It’s time to break out the bikes, lace up the running shoes, sip coffee at a sidewalk café, go mushroom hunting or take the first wine tour of the season.

Of all of the ways to experience the natural beauty of the Traverse City area, the best just might be from the water! And thanks to an abundance of freshwater lakes, streams and rivers, you can find the perfect spot and mode of paddle-transit that's right for you -- whether in spring, summer or fall!

Adventurous? Take a sea-worthy kayak out on Lake Michigan for spectacular views of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Feeling more laid back? Canoe or drift the afternoon away in a tube down a tree-shaded river. Or maybe you want to try the latest craze: stand-up paddle-boarding. Most early summer mornings you can find SUP lovers enjoying yoga out on Grand Traverse Bay.

Fall is All Around!

Fall is a favorite season for many locals and visitors alike. The days are warm, the nights are cool, and you won’t find a prettier place to take a color tour. Rolling hills are painted in deep reds, bright oranges and sunny yellows – a striking contrast against the sapphire blue of Grand Traverse Bay. Harvest time means wine tours, hay rides, and cider & doughnuts. Kayak down a lazy river or bike along miles of paved trails. Here’s to fall in Traverse City!

Wineries in Fall - Traverse City is situated directly on the 45th parallel – halfway between the North Pole and the Equator – which is the same locale as the famous wine regions of France and Italy. The area’s two wine trails are located on the picturesque Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas – both of which stretch out into the sapphire blue waters of Lake Michigan.

Fall is an especially popular time at the vineyards and tasting rooms. The vines are heavy with fruit, ripe for the picking, and the air is heavy with fruity goodness (not to mention a fair amount of honey bees and fruit flies!) Visitors can often see the grapes being pressed into wine during their autumn tasting tour, and the spectacular fall color on the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas rolling hills is beyond breathtaking.

Gear Up for Winter!

Traverse City is transformed into a glittering white playground each winter. Strap on your downhill or Nordic skis, blaze a snowshoe trail through the snowy woods, or take an exhilarating snowmobile ride over picturesque rolling hills. Or spend the day shopping in our charming downtown or at the historic Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Then enjoy dinner and a glass of local wine by the fire. Cheers!

No skis or snowshoes? Don’t worry. You can enjoy the majestic beauty of a Traverse City winter even if you don’t have any winter sports equipment. Just lace up your boots, button your coat and tug down your cap for a good long winter hike! It’s all a matter of finding the right place where the snow isn’t too deep, and that can be anything from a walk along the shore, a stroll through Traverse City’s many charming neighborhoods, or a brisk walk along the Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trail, which is usually kept cleared for walkers and hikers.

Summer is Here!

Summer’s endless days are made for making memories. Play along miles of sugar-sand beaches, visit the magnificent Sleeping Bear Dunes, sail on a Tall Ship, watch a parade, go to a drive-in movie, or eat cherry pie from the Cherry Capital of the World. Ride bikes along miles of breathtaking trails or play a round of championship golf. Then revel in a farm-to-table meal, sip local wine or beer, and watch the sun go down. It’s summer in Traverse City!

Golf - Traverse City's 16 championship golf courses are in full swing when summer arrives -- and it's a beautiful sight. They include work by some of the country's leading architects -- two Arnold Palmer designs (Manitou Passage and The Legend), Jack Nicklaus’s groundbreaking layout at The Bear, the Jerry Matthews designs at Antrim Dells and A-Ga-Ming, Tom Weiskopf’s award-winning course at Cedar River and Gary Player’s challenging The Wolverine. There are other gems among these hills, too – from Hawks Eye and Lochenheath to Elmbrook and The Crown.

In summer, when most of America’s better-known golf destinations are sweltering in heat and humidity, the coastal hills around Grand Traverse Bay are cool and comfortable all day long. What's more, golfers actually have more time to play during a Traverse City summer; since we're so far to the north, at the very westernmost edge of the Eastern Time Zone, midsummer days last really long here. Toward the end of June and the start of July, you'll be able to stay out on the links until well after 9 p.m.
