Balcón Ballena provides a captivating perch from which a couple can enjoy broad tropical coastal views and the diverse nature and natural beauty of Costa Rica. The surrounding jungle is alive with toucans, aracari, parrots, hummingbirds, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, pezotes and sloths which can be seen right from your terrace.
The property has a lower and upper level with the lower level dedicated for parking one car off of the road behind a privacy wall equipped with a manually sliding wooden gate. From the parking-area you are just steps up to the house, terrace, patio and infinity pool.
The house was built oriented toward the best views and integrated into the mountain ridge. Balcón Ballena was designed to shade guests from the tropical sun and take advantage of the cooling mountain breezes you don't find down at sea-level. Most folks find they do not need air conditioning up here however the master bedroom suite has a remote controlled wall-mounted air-conditioner for your comfort just in case. Ceiling fans, Pacific and mountain breezes and the infinity pool keep you cool.
Balcón Ballena has been thoughtfully constructed and furnished to highlight local craftsmanship, Costa Rican woods, stone, and inspired by the natural beauty and indigenous art of the country.
Balcón Ballena offers a well-equipped kitchen with full-size refrigerator / freezer, coffee maker, toaster, oven and an island-mounted gas stove from where you can cook while enjoying a spectacular ocean view out over the infinity pool.
Our water comes from a mountain spring tested for purity by our water association. You can drink water at Balcón Ballena. If you prefer bottled water, we provide a container from the supermarket to get you started.
Balcón Ballena has two full bathrooms that include showers with river rock walls. The master bedroom shower is a private outdoor shower. There is also another outdoor shower near the pool for when you come back from the beach or a hike. Showering with jungle views is a very refreshing experience if you’ve never tried it. Maybe you’ll see a toucan or a monkey!
The most attractive feature of Balcón Ballena are sights of the ever-changing interaction of the sun, ocean, sky and jungle. You will begin to feel the rhythm of the tide throughout the day as the Whales Tail emerges at low tide and sinks beneath the water surface at high tide. It is a spectacular place to relax, take in the rainforest and watch the surf breaks down below on Chaman Beach.
If you visit during one of Uvita’s world-famous Whale Festivals, on clear days one can use binoculars from the terrace to see whale watching boats cluster near whales off the shore. We've even seen whales spouting from the terrace of Balcón Ballena!
Balcón Ballena has an infinity pool for cooling down and relaxing. The pictures say it all.
An awesome BBQ grill/smoker is ready to use. Please only use it out on the graveled area next to the pool deck. Please never use the grill inside of the house or underneath the terrace roof. (See if you can find the design used on the grill somewhere else in the house : )
Balcón Ballena offers fiber optic internet service which means very responsive Wifi. Streaming services and hosting video conferencing calls are a breeze however like all utilities here in the rugged jungles of Costa Rica, when you manage your expectations, you’ll probably be satisfied.
Cell phone service is also very good at Balcón Ballena due to our location on the mountain, we have direct line of sight down to the cellular tower antennae downtown in Uvita. Strong cell signals are available from several mobile carriers at the house which also allows guests to use their mobile phone as a WIFI hotspot for streaming and remote working.
