I am a woman whose life has rarely been linear...more organic, as opportunities presented themselves. Growing up in the mountains of western NC, with a pacel of faculty kids who ran the mountains and had many adventures of our own, unsupervised imaginations! My parents, too, had great imaginations and let me figure out what my limits were after contracting polio as an infant.
Needless to say, that freedom gave me the inner strength to live my life on my own terms and chart a life course lived in response to whatever learning and growing opportunities presented themselves - an improvisational jazz approach to life.
In my later youth, I traveled and lived extensively throughout western Europe, recovering my sense of self after too much western medicine. Upon returning home and many jobs later - running a coffee house, making brooms w/ a retired NASA computer wizard, caning chairs, sous chef assistant in a continental restaurant. My next journey - a 3 month camping trip across the US in a VW microbus - revealed the utter wonder of the US landmass to me! The next path I set me on was to study Chinese for passion's sake and ended up with higher ed degrees that brought me home to my whole self.
I have a passion for art, theater, movies and museums that honestly deal with the full range of the diverse human experience. Music has always been a large part of my life - gospel growing up, bluegrass ,blues, & jazz and the music of the African and Latino disapora. My house reflects all of these loves. It is filled with art and music from around the world...many by artist friends or gifts from other friends. I affectionately describe my home as decorated in "Early American 2nd Hand" that reflect unique thing glimpsed out of the corner of me eye at a yard sale or junk store - or handwoven rugs from a neighbor's trash! - all creating an organic home that reflects my love of color, light and life.
Since finding my way home to the disability (Website hidden by Airbnb) the age of 35, I have been involved in the disability rights movement as an activist, researcher and writer. My home was also the home of the late Ron Mace, FAIA, a disabled architect who drafted the first accessible state building code in the US for NC and went on to help shape the Americans with Disabilities Act's Architectural Guidelines. He shared his home with me and now I get to share it with others!
My favorite book is the Tao Te Ching and my favorite movie is Mindwalk! The image that best describes my way of life is the yin/yang, that symbolizes the rising and falling of all things, its circular unfolding and refolding of everything in the Universe. Ask me about the farmer whose stallion ran away!
