Built in Etruscan times, Montepulciano has for centuries been the center of the war between Siena and Florence. The cities were in conflict for the domination of Montepulciano until 1232. Montepulciano has only one main street called "Il Corso", which starts from the lower part of the city to Piazza Grande. Outside the walls, there is the Church of Sant'Agnese with the Gothic portal, the Medici Fortress of Sangallo and the 14th century gate of Gracciano, which has been used as gateway to the village. Outside the walls of the historic center of Montepulciano, in the middle of a spacious green meadow, there is the Church of San Biagio.
