definita la migliore al mondo. A region of traditions, a cult for good food, a passion for motors, history and art, Emilia Romagna finds in Modena the ideal exchange point between North and South Italy but also with the rest of Europe. There is no lack of architectural treasures that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a lively cultural life, a look back to the past that is mixed with the innovation and typicality that make Modena famous all over the world. A city on a human scale not too frequented by tourists because it is often not taken into account by the classic routes, it is instead a treasure chest ready to reveal itself to the attentive visitor who, in addition to the pleasures of the palate, wants to dive into art, history and, why not, even modernity.

The right itinerary for couples in love

The Duomo and the Ghirlandina are the two most important monuments, and for many people the bell tower is the most beautiful in the world: 86 meters high, it dominates the skyline expressing at best all its role as a symbol of the city. One of its characteristics is the fact that it is visible to the traveller from any cardinal point of arrival. Built as a richly decorated bell tower, the Ghirlandina has also played an important civic function since its origins, with the sound of its bells that marked the times of city life, signalled the opening of the gates of the city walls and called the population together in situations of alarm and danger. Moreover, inside were kept chests, public acts and objects of high symbolic value. The different floors, six of them, were built separately from 1160 to be finished in 1319 with the Gothic octagonal spire. The metropolitan cathedral is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo and San Geminiano: together with the Ghirlandina, they have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and represent one of the greatest examples of Romanesque art in Italy and Europe. The architect Lanfranco and the sculptor Wiligelmo are just two of the illustrious personalities who participated in the creation of this masterpiece, whose first stone for its construction was laid in June 1099. The structure designed by Lanfranco, a basilica divided into three naves by an alternation of columns and pillars with a raised presbytery on the crypt, was in fact grafted with the extraordinary harmony of Wiligelmo's sculptures. To him and other sculptors active at the beginning of the 12th century we owe the splendid decoration that populates every capital of the loggia and the semi-columns and every shelf of the arches below with plant motifs or fantastic beings. Inside, too, there is much to discover with the arches, the columns, the raised altar and the crypt. The luminous facade of the marble exterior contrasts with the interior where light struggles to filter but this makes the atmosphere even more solemn while admiring the terracotta sculptures and frescoed chapel. Being in Piazza Grande (read more here) you are also seduced by the beauty of the Palazzo Comunale, a seventeenth-century building with arcades, and the other historic buildings that parade one after the other. The other churches of Modena also contain various masterpieces, such as the ancient Santa Maria della Pomposa in the little square of the same name, the baroque churches of San Biagio, Sant'Agostino called Pantheon degli Estensi, or San Vincenzo where the Este tombs are located. Of particular interest is the abbey complex of San Pietro, with the Abbey and a Benedictine monastery that opens to the public evocative cloisters and the ancient apothecary's shop where the products are made according to ancient recipes. About the Pantheon of the Estensi, discover more.

The Municipal Theatre dedicated to Luciano Pavarotti, inaugurated in 1841 with the name Teatro dell'Illustrissima Comunità (Theatre of the Most Illustrious Community), is perfectly inserted in the urban context of the historic centre and has preserved its beauty intact throughout its history, thanks also to a careful restoration that has brought it back to its original splendour. Strolling through the centre of Modena also means recalling the greatness of the Este family, thanks to whom the city became the State Capital from the end of the 16th century to 1859. Emblem of this magnificence and seat of the Este Court first, of the Duchy of Modena and Reggio then is the Ducal Palace, which today houses the prestigious Military Academy. A masterpiece of residential Baroque architecture, it is an imposing, sumptuous and particularly rich building. Striking for refinement and elegance is also the Estense Gallery, where the collection consists of precious treasures owned by the Dukes of Este and other masterpieces acquired later: among others, the works of Guercino, Annibale Carracci, Dossi, Tintoretto, El Greco, Correggio, Guido Reni, as well as musical instruments, jewels. Interesting is also the Biblioteca Estense which preserves the very precious Bible by Borso d'Este, but also illuminated manuscripts, maps, prints, drawings and precious illustrated texts.

The centre of Modena revolves around the Via Emilia, just as in the past the Roman city developed along the consular road. Of the Roman city you can admire finds and monuments in the Archaeological Museum, the Museo Lapidario Estense and the Lapidario Romano, where the monumental altar of Vetilia Egloge emerged from a building site in 2007 in excellent condition.

Considering its industrious nature, it is not surprising that Modena is the cradle of several important entrepreneurial adventures such as that of the Panini brothers to whom the Museum of the Figurine is dedicated, unique of its kind, with a patrimony of over 500 thousand examples of figurines and similar materials kept in the Palazzo Santa Margherita. The collection brings together, in addition to the more classic figurines, also antique prints, calendars or printed matchboxes. Another unmissable stop during a visit to Modena is the Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari, a splendid tribute of the city to its illustrious citizen Enzo Ferrari, driver and founder of the Ferrari car manufacturer. The Museum is divided into two areas: the house where the visitor can retrace the life of this great character through films, photos and a variety of objects, and then the exhibition area itself, with its futuristic shell and engineering wonders that have made the history of Italy.

You cannot say that you have known Modena without tasting one of its traditional products, balsamic vinegar and some secrets about its production.
