Situated deep in the Central Drakensberg is the enchanted Champagne Valley, a place of rare beauty that manages to remain almost entirely unaffected by development. Surrounded by sweeping foothills and farmlands, wheat and maize fields, forests and grasslands and a bird's-eye view of Champagne Castle the second highest peak in South Africa, Cathkin Peak, Sterkhorn, Turret, Amphlett, Dragons Back, and Monks Cowl all the way to Giants Castle mountain range on the far left.
The quaint and clean town of Winterton marks the entrance to Champagne Valley, which is said to have received its name from the first climber’s need to celebrate at the peak with a bottle of champagne, only to drop it before he could commemorate his notable achievement.
Champagne Valley is home to more than 150 species of bird making it popular with birders and is renowned for the number of activities available to visitors. One can walk or hike, horse ride, canopy walk, river raft, quad bike, mountain bike, abseil, glide, fish, go golfing and so much more.
There are a few areas of local interest too, including the Anglo Boer War battlefield sites of Spioenkop, and Winston Churchill’s capture and ambush site; all this only 2.5 hours from Durban and 3.5 hours from Johannesburg.

A little something about us... We are an English speaking family, of British, Portuguese and South African decent, middle-aged, married with two teenage children and living the quiet and peaceable life on a small farm. We recently relocated from Durban on the coast to the meandering hills and mountains of the Champagne Valley as we wanted to experience something really different, a mid-life adventure, to get out of the rut of city life... and have always been fond of the magnificent Drakensberg mountains since our childhoods. We are both independent freelancers, Lyse being a journalist and me, Luke a graphic designer and manage our careers from our simple and cosy base in the farmland of the Valley. We are a small team at Castle View Farm working hard to make sure your stay is as enjoyable as possible. If there is anything we can help you with during your booking and stay, please ask one of us and we will do our utmost to assist you. We pride ourselves on our reputation and therefore would appreciate it if you speak to us if there is anything not to your satisfaction so we can try to resolve the situation. We love to read the comments in our guest book so please feel free to leave a comment during your stay or as you depart. Also, a good review goes a long way if you feel happy during your stay and we trust you certainly will. Luke, Lyse and family.
