The Daurade is a district of Toulouse, located in the city center, near the river "La Garonne". It is a privileged place for walkers and tourists who enjoy the restaurants and the proximity of the river.
The renovation of the square took place at the beginning of 2016 as part of the renovation and subsequent pedestrianization of downtown Toulouse. The surface has been flattened and new grass has been added allowing families to enjoy the sun in summer by playing or picnicking.
The "Basilique de La Daurade" is known at its foundation for its now extinct gilding; these are the origin of the name of the basilica and, by extension, the neighborhood. The "Ecole des Beaux Arts" is attached to it.
History :
In the city center of Toulouse, along the Garonne, stands the Daurade, a neighborhood appreciated by all tourists and walkers, especially at the arrival of spring and the first rays of sun. But why was this name given to him? Contrary to what one might think, nothing to do with fish ...
Port de la Daurade, Pont de la Daurade, Place de la Daurade, Basilique Notre-Dame la Daurade. Where does this name come from ? The rapprochement between the Daurade, a district near the Garonne, and the fish of the same name seems rather logical. Perhaps there was a fish market there. Yet, at the origins of this denomination, no connection with fishing! But with gold. More glamorous, you will agree ...
It all began more than 1500 years ago, in 431 AD, when the Council of Ephesus gave Mary the title of "Mother of God", initiating the cult of the Virgin. In 436 AD, on the remains of a pagan temple, is built a church dedicated to Mary, represented in the form of a black virgin: the Church of the Daurade. Not a basilica yet. It will take extensions (Romanesque nave, cloister), a demolition in the 17th century due to poor maintenance, a reconstruction in the 18th, so that it is consecrated basilica in 1876 by Pope Pie IX. Anyway, back on topic. Why the "Daurade"?
"Mosaics with a gold background in homage to Mary adorned the church when it was built. And "daurado" means golden in Occitan. However, of these mosaics, nothing remains today, except a piece preserved in the "Musée Calvet d'Avignon". Nothing, except the name of the district ... The district of the Daurade was built around the Basilica.
