Constanza House
Constanza House is located right on top of the Venetian fortifications surrounding old Nicosia. The wall was reconstructed by the Venetians in the 12th century to secure the town against foreign invaders.
In 1191, whilst King Richard the Lionheart was sailing to the Holy Land on the Third Crusade, due to a storm some of his ships ran aground at ancient Amathus, east of Limassol. As the tyrannical Byzantine governor of the island, Isaac Komninos, ill-treated Richard’s soldiers and jailed his fiancée Berengaria, in retaliation, Richard declared war against Komninos and conquered Cyprus. After marrying Berengaria in Limassol, the following year Richard sold Cyprus to the Knights Templar, who in turn sold the island to the Frankish king, Guy de Lusignan. The Franks ruled Cyprus until 1489, when Queen of Cyprus, Ekaterina Kornaro, widow of King James II relinquished the kingdom to the Democracy of Venice. In 1570 an Ottoman army of 250.000 men invaded Cyprus, and despite the vigorous defense by Venetian and local soldiers, the invaders’ advantage in weapons broke the stonewall between Podocattaro and Constanza bastions, exactly where Constanza House was built at the beginning of the 20th century.

Walking westwards from Constanza House, in less than 10 minutes you will arrive at Eleftheria Square, the historic centre of the capital. In the contemporary part of Nicosia, about 200m from the Square, you can visit the Leventis Foundation art gallery www.leventisgallery.org.

North of the Square, the paved pedestrian streets of Ledra and Onasagorou, once the commercial centre of Nicosia, offer a wide selection of cafes, tavernas and shops. Between the two streets you will find a Museum & Observatory at the 11th floor of Shacolas Tower (behind H&M clothes shop), which combines a modern museum with an unhindered and beautiful view of the entire city. The interactive exhibition shows photographs and descriptions of Old Nicosia offer a multilingual taped history and telescopes to enjoy 3600 views of the divided capital. Address: Ledra Street, Nicosia, Tel:+357 22 679369.

At the end of Ledra Street a checkpoint leads to the occupied area of Nicosia, established after the Turkish invasion of 1974. If you decide to cross the border (you must have travel documents with you), you can visit Buyuk Han, built in 1572, and the Venetian Cathedral of Saint Sofia, which in 1570 was converted by the Ottomans to a mosque and was where Lala Mustafa prayed and thanked Prophet Mohamed for assisting him to conquer the town.

Walking westwards along the Venetian wall, you will pass Paphos Gate (Porta San Dominico), where in 1878 Admiral John Hay raised the British flag in place of the Ottoman flag. After Paphos Gate, the second exit on the small roundabout will lead you to the Archaeological Museum, built by the British at the beginning of 20th century, where you will have the opportunity to admire significant exhibits from ancient Cyprus. This is despite the enormous number of Cypriot antiquities smuggled and exported from the island currently exhibited in museums all over the world.

A 5-minute walk from Constanza House in a northwesterly direction, will take you to the noteworthy house of Kornesios Hatzigiorgakis, a famous dragoman (an interpreter, translator and official guide) for 30 years from 1779 during Ottoman rule. He acted as the liaison between the Council at Konstantinopolis and the Cypriot Archbishop. This prestigious title given by the Ottoman authorities to very few local Christians, gave Kornesios the opportunity to accumulate huge wealth and power. The house, which was awarded the Europa Nostra prize for its exemplary renovation work, today functions as the Ethnological Museum. The House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios, Address: 20 Patriarchou Grigoriou St, Nicosia. Tel: 22 305316. The entrance fees is €2.50

Nearby you can visit the Archbishop’s Palace and the Byzantine Museum, which contains the richest and most representative collection of Byzantine art on the island. Over 200 icons dating from the 9th to the 19th centuries, as well as sacred vessels, vestments, robes, and books are exhibited. The collection includes many icons dating from the 12th century when iconography was at its peak. Address: Plateia Archiepiskopou Kyprianou, (within the Archbishopric). Tel: +357 22 430 008. Entrance fees €4.00. (http://www.nicosia.org.cy/en-GB/discover/museums/byzantine-museum/).

Walking eastwards along the Venetian walls (Konstantinou Palaeologou Str.) for about 10 minutes from Constanza House, you will arrive at Famagusta Gate (Porta Guiliana). We recommend a visit to the Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR), located on Ermou Str., home to Costas and Rita Severis private collections. Exhibits include paintings, antique costumes, and memorabilia related to Cyprus and neighbouring countries. CVAR also houses a library and research centre with over 10,000 available volumes. CVAR screens films, slide shows and hosts workshops and seminars to promote understanding and peaceful coexistence.

As opening and closing times, as well as entrance fees, are subject to alterations without notice, you are advised to check before visiting museums and sites.

During your explorations of old and modern Nicosia, you can take a break and enjoy a coffee in one of the many cafeterias or sample the delicious Cypriot cuisine in a hospitable restaurant.

If you decide to use the guesthouse’s fully equipped kitchen to prepare your own meals, note that on Wednesdays and Saturdays you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, and local produce from the Municipality’s open-air market in the nearby Constanza bastion.

During the evening hours, the gorgeous house veranda enjoys the Troodos Mountain breeze, which compensates for the midday heat. Do not miss the opportunity to enjoy this space.
