Meticulously updated and restored to its former glory as a 4,100-square-foot single-family residence, the James Taylor House is one of Staunton’s most inviting and unusual guest venues. Stately architecture, large rooms filled with abundant natural light, and unrivaled panoramic views to the mountains and the cityscape set this house apart.

Location is in the heart of Staunton's Gospel Hill Historic District, on a quiet street only a few blocks from the Downtown restaurants, specialty shops and performance venues. The renowned American Shakespeare Center and Mary Baldwin University are even closer. Ten-foot ceilings, six fireplaces, large windows, and the unusual configuration of a floor plan that has an open, expansive flow are some of the features that make the house a comfortable, luxurious and spacious environment unique to the Staunton experience. Also unusual in a house of this age are the large, eat-in kitchen and adjoining mud room/pantry/laundry room with a rear-access door to a generous city yard where a large brick patio is planned but is still a work in progress. The side and front porches, as well as the upper porches, offer private outdoor living space. Rear, off-street parking for two cars offers level entry to the house. The finished third floor can provide additional sleeping accommodations upon request. It is also a vast living area that can serve many needs, with French-door access to the balcony deck.

We want guests to be comfortable as well as respectful of the furnishings and the historic detail of the house. As befitting a luxury rental, furnishings include upscale furniture (classic vintage furniture, mostly mid-century modern), antique oriental rugs, contemporary art, and a variety of designer elements and artifacts. A list of Guidelines provided at check-in details the use of the cleaning products provided for the stone and stainless steel counters in the the kitchen, as well as for the gas range. Reasonable care is all we expect, not ongoing cleaning and maintenance. That care does include using a squeegee on the two frameless glass shower doors after showering. This is also a no-shoes house, a policy that seems increasingly widespread in the interest of cleanliness. Finally, we ask long-term guests to be responsible for carrying their trash cans to the street on Mondays for an early morning pick-up on Tuesday.

My husband and I moved to Staunton in 2012, because, like so many other transplant residents, we fell in love with the town, its amazing historic architecture, and the lifestyle it offers. We spent three years renovating the house, a project that satisfied my passions for architecture and design, as well as for art. My husband's passions are photography and cycling; opportunities for both abound in the Shenandoah Valley. We enjoy entertaining and look forward to sharing the pleasures of the house and the town with visitors, who should not be surprised to find themselves similarly smitten with the charm of Staunton.
