Location: We are on Prospect Hill, 1.4 miles to Harvard Sq.; 1.3 to Central Sq.; 2.0 to Tufts University, 2.3 to MIT, and 2.6 to downtown Boston. Steps from fabled Union Square, with cafés, pubs, live music, Best-of-Boston restaurants, ethnic grocers, a gym, two yoga studios, three craft breweries and community acupuncture. The neighborhood is friendly, diverse and the safest in Somerville.

Transportation: Ample on-street parking. Nine-minute walk to the Union Square station of the Green Line, which connects to all other subway lines. Six-to-eight-minute walk to eight bus lines.

In cities that were built before the automobile, neighborhoods surrounded commercial centers so that no one had to walk much more than ten minutes or so to buy the necessities of life, meet a friend, worship, or have a drink and a meal.

In Europe, these are variously called plätzen, pleinen, places, piazzas, and plazas. In New and Old England, they are called “squares.” Our neighborhood surrounds Union Square.

In the 18th Century, the neighborhood was dairy farmland, informally called “Milk Row.” A crossroads for trade routes created a market for a tavern, which opened around 1770. Paul Revere road down what is now called “Washington Street” on his midnight ride.

Our home is on Prospect Hill, which forms the northern edge of Union Square. Continuing the Siege of Boston, American militia forces retreated here after the June 1775 Battle of Bunker Hill because it afforded an excellent view of what the British were doing in Boston. They called it the “Citadel.” At that time, the hill was as tall as the monument atop it is today.

George Washington joined them, and they spent the winter here, raising the USA’s first flag on January 1, 1776. Over that winter American forces sledded artillery captured from Fort Ticonderoga and placed it on Dorchester Heights, threatening British positions in Boston. On March 17th British forces boarded over a hundred ships and sailed to Nova Scotia. “Evacuation Day” remains a city holiday in Boston, Cambridge, Brookline and Somerville.

With the completion of the Middlesex Canal in 1803 the neighborhood became an industrial center with major meat packing, brick making, glass manufacturing, and other industrial operations. Abolitionist firemen of Somerville’s Engine Company 1 erected a liberty pole here in 1853 and dubbed it “Liberty Pole Square.” But its name changed to its present one after the American Civil War began in 1861, when it became a recruiting and mustering center for Union Army troops.

The slaughter houses on the south side of Union Square (Boynton Yards) dumped their offal into the Miller’s River for decades. By 1874 the pollution, smell, and associated health problems were so vile that the Commonwealth ordered it filled. This order and action became the basis for most subsequent U.S. environmental protection legislation.

During the first half of the 20th Century Union Square enjoyed the highest levels of commerce of the city’s seven squares. Beginning in late 1950s, the lure of the suburbs and deindustrialization produced a drop of at least 30% in its, and the city’s, population. Rents declined. And while Somerville had always been an immigrant city, new arrivals from Brazil, Central America, Haiti and Southern Asia began replacing their European predecessors.

By the 1990s, Somerville had the highest proportion of resident artists of any U.S. city, and gentrification was gradually increasing. It accelerated after a 1996 Massachusetts ballot measure banned rent control. While the neighborhood remains ethnically diverse, gentrification continues to increase, while economic diversity continues to decline.

Today, trendy eateries and service enterprises cohabit with ethnic grocers and beloved old hangouts. The extension of the Green Line to Union Square and a Redevelopment Plan has created misery for those driving through the Square, although the worst appears to be past.

The neighborhood’s density ensures an intensity of service and retail establishments. Guests will receive a guides to the neighborhood and to the Boston areas, which include hyperlinks to all enterprises discussed therein.

My checkered career has included work as a community organizer, consultant to small businesses, consultant to Fortune 500 companies, sociologist, social entrepreneur, and executive at an ecommerce start up. At present, I am an unemployed malcontent.

I have Bachelors and Masters degrees in sociology from UC Santa Cruz and Rutgers, and an MBA from Yale University.

The quality that most inspires me about human beings is our capacity to transform ourselves. My greatest pleasure is spending time with friends and looking at the world through their eyes. I also like to read, write, listen to music, teach community development (for NeighborWorks America), and in warm months, ride my bike. I write a biweekly column for the Somerville Times.

Yo hablo español como un niño retrasado. Pero si usted tiene la paciencia de un santo conmigo, nos podemos comunicar.
