The Bay of Islands has an abundance of activities to keep you busy. A day out on the water is highly recommended - dolphin/whale watching, fishing, diving, day trips to one of the islands - it has it all. Explore the charms of historic Russell/Kororareka, NZ's first capital, and once know as the "Hell Hole of the Pacific" in the 1800s. History oozes from the charming village and the pace of life is slow and casual. Swim at the safe pebbled beach in Russell, or travel just over the hill to the sandy surf beach at Long Bay. For the foodies the refurbished Duke of Marlborough is a highlight, as is the view from the deck out to the harbour. Local wineries, such as Omata Estate, offer wonderful wine and food options. A short ferry ride gets you to Paihia and Waitangi. A visit to the Treaty Grounds is a must for all, for the more adventurous there are fantastic mountain bike trails just beyond. The Waitangi golf course has some of the most picturesque holes in NZ overlooking the Bay. Russell is great all year round and not just a summer hot spot. Come and enjoy it soon.
