Joss and Paula Joubert are innovative, hands-on and entirely dedicated. They also have a holiday apartment in Umhlanga, The Shades 61. Bingelela started in 1998 on Needwood farm, just outside Bergville when Paula decided to start a small 12 seater restaurant in their farm house. Joss being a farmer, supported his wife in her endeavor and assisted in the early days being a barmen and musician with their band the Dirty Dogs, playing live music. Bingelela slowly grew from strength to strength and is now a 250 seater Restaurant, Pub, Pizzeria and B&B. With Bingelela growing into a successful venture, Joss and Paula decided to invest in Umhlanga purchasing their flat the Shades 61. Through their hard work, business savvy and warm hospitality that has ensured Bingelela’ s great reputation since it first opened its doors in 1998 as well as the Shades 61 in Umhlanga. It’s been an organic process of growth for Joss and Paula who have succeeded in building and maintaining a wonderful place for visitors to come relax and unwind and experience that “home-away-from-home” feeling while delighting in all the charms of the coastal as well as Drakensberg regions. Joss is an avid fisherman and will cease any opportunity to pack his boat and go fishing with friends, family or anyone else that is keen. Among his favorite fishing spots are Sodwana, Cape Vidal and Mozambique. His other hobby is flying and has recently taking the necessary steps, starting his venture into getting a pilot’s license. Paula still sees to catering, running the restaurant and developing the menu and it’s her incredible passion and flair for food that’s resulted in the continued success of the restaurant which draws guests from far and wide who come back time and again for her inventive and mouth-wateringly delicious dishes. Her creative personality is further seen all over – from the hand-made lamps, mosaic tables and mirrored pillars at the entrance to the garnishing of the dishes. Both Joss and Paula love to travel, having been to Spain, Italy and Vietnam. Their favourite travel destination though is Thailand. They love the tranquil environment and that they always feel welcomed.
