Located in the highest part of the Eremo di Montevergine, just next to the bell tower of the church of San Francesco di Paola, Galatea is the ideal solution for a family with children.
The Montevergine Hermitage, the earliest settlement in the area, dating back to the early 1700s, occupies a panoramic position overlooking San Francesco beach, which is about 100 metres from the entrance beside the church of San Francesco.
This unique setting is just two kilometres from the centre of Forio, in an exclusive location always considered a residential area, with villas and prestigious hotels served by restaurants, bars and (URL HIDDEN) is an ideal location for those who want to enjoy a holiday steeped in the special atmosphere of Ischia, with its nature, relaxation and fun, while enjoying absolute peace and quiet.
Nearby are the Zaro woods, with“la Colombaia”, the villa that once belonged to the director Luchino Visconti and is now home to a cultural foundation dedicated to film and entertainment. The woods also have a place of worshipdedicated to Our Lady of Zaro, while a few steps from the Hermitage you can visit the famous “Gardens of Mortella”, considered one of the ten most beautiful gardens in Europe. Also at 2 km you can enjoy a day of relaxation at the Negombo Thermal Park or a little further away at the Poseidon Gardens Thermal Park
The Hermitage can be accessed from the square in front of the church of San Francesco di Paola, through a wrought iron gate. A long covered patio with an ancient well, lined by beautiful wide arches, opens out to an irregular-shaped uncovered patio leading to the main staircase, with classic motifs in Piperno stone.
From the main staircase, a large, bright entrance leads to the main section of the hermitage, the Petrea apartment, formerly the residence of an early 20th century English peeress. It is positioned at the centre of the apartments like the pistil of a flower surrounded by the petals. The exposure of the hermitage tothe west allows the beautiful sunsets to be seen from nearly all the apartments, as well as the outline of Ventotene Island on the horizon. Right after sunset, when the atmospheric conditions are right, you can see “the vanishing sunfrolic, amuse itself and emit a gentle, bewitching, fleeting ray of light: THE GREEN FLASH”.
Montevergine Hermitage offers its guests 7 exclusive accomodations, all have satellite TV, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and private parking. Most of them are recently renovated and have terraces, sea views and a cooking area with a fully equipped kitchen. The apartments have characteristic names: Petrea, Galatea, Calypso, Nesea, Teti, Actea and Seaview Dome. They vary in terms of size and layout, accommodating a minimum of two to a maximum of six guests.
Galatea, which means “with milk-white skin”, is named after the sea nymph described in Greek mythology. The apartment is accessed from the upper garden, which has terraces and various viewpoints and is shared with some of the other apartments.
A small entrance door beside the dome of the adjacent church of San Francesco leads into the apartment, which consists of:
- a very spacious scenic bedroom with a king size bed and a free-standing bath tub at the foot of the bed in an exceptional panoramic vantage point;
- a bathroom with a shower;
- a second double bedroom, the “alcove”, with a special king size bed and a view of the upper garden;
- a second bathroom with a large shower;
- a spacious living area with a fireplace and large windows looking onto the front terrace;
- a separate kitchen area.
All the rooms are air conditioned.
The first double bedroom and the living room both face west onto a large furnished level terrace, from where you could almost touch the sea that bathes the beautiful beach of San Francesco, framed by palm trees. The terrace has a pergola and is perfectly usable all the year round, to admire the beautiful sunsets and the outline of Ventotene Island on the horizon.
The apartment was completely renovated in the autumn of 2015 under the supervision of interior designer Giuliano Andrea dell’Uva. The renovation was aimed at restoring the original structure of the residence from the turn of the last century; where there was a single large room used as a bedroom by the previous English owner, subsequently modified during the restructuring in the 1980s, a single visual space has now been recreated, including the living room and bedroom area, which are separated by a large glazed partition.For the work, wide use was made of modern materials such as resin and special paints, together with traditional materials such as simple hand forged wrought iron and common glass, all used in harmony with items of design furniture.
The area of San Francesco is awesome, the beach is a few steps from the house; nearby restaurants, bars and market make this place ideal for relaxing and comfortable holidays.
