“Tate Modern observation deck - Tate Modern is a great museum to visit for those interested in art. It is now also home to a top observation deck located on the 10th floor. This is even free to access. From this lookout, you can enjoy views to the East, North and West. As sunset is often across the river this makes it one of the best places to go in London for sunset as well as into the blue hour.”

“IWM London is the world’s leading museum of war. Founded during the First World War, it gives voice to the extraordinary experiences of ordinary people forced to live their lives in a world torn apart by conflict. It's huge, over six floors, and the last time I visited it had exhibits covering World War 1 and 2, how they affected families and a sort of trench exhibit you could walk through to learn about soldiers experiences. It's free, like all museums in London, but you can make a donation or sometimes have to pay to see certain exhibits. ”

“The London Dungeon is a uniquely thrilling attraction that will whisk you way back to the capital's most perilous past. See, hear, feel and (ahem!) smell the chillingly amusing characters of the 'bad old days' as they come to life before you. Will you lose yourself in fear or in mirth? It’s exciting, fun and scary!”

“HMS Belfast is one of only three remaining vessels from the bombardment fleet which supported the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. The other vessels are the destroyer USS Laffey, part of the historic ships grouped at Patriots Point, South Carolina, and the dreadnought battleship USS Texas at San Jacinto, Texas. In total, HMS Belfast spent 33 days in support of the landings and fired over 5,000 shells ”

“Golden Hind was an English galleon best known for her privateering circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580, captained by Sir Francis Drake. She was originally known as Pelican, but was renamed by Drake mid-voyage in 1578, in honour of his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose crest was a golden 'hind' (a female red deer). Hatton was one of the principal sponsors of Drake's world voyage. One full-sized, still sailable reconstruction containing original pieces of the galleon exists in London, on the south bank of the Thames.”

“The Clink was a prison in Southwark, England, which operated from the 12th century until 1780. The prison served the Liberty of the Clink, a local manor area owned by the Bishop of Winchester rather than by the reigning monarch. As the Liberty owner, the Bishop kept all revenues from the Clink Liberty, and could put people in prison for failing to make their payments. As the Bishop, he could also imprison heretics. The Clink prison was situated next to the Bishop's London-area residence of Winchester Palace. The Clink was possibly the oldest men's prison and probably the oldest women's prison in England.[”

“View from the Shard - Definitely my favourite viewpoint in London. Options at the Shard are to go to the viewing platform on the top floor or stay in the amazing Shangri-La hotel. Both will present you with spectacular 360 views of the city. The Shard is also a good spot for sunset and blue hour pics.”

“Dean's Yard is built on the site of The Elms and the former monastery farmyard. Since the 18th century there have been three rows of trees and a central green here, but the high railings surrounding it were removed in 1967. The yard now features a number of large trees, including London planes, a red horse chestnut, a tulip tree, maple and sycamore. Smaller trees include silver birches and a medlar. The surrounding buildings are in an attractive ‘collegiate' style. The site is used by Westminster School as an occasional football pitch.”

“When she's away at her summer palace in Scotland, visitors can purchase tickets for tours of the State Rooms, the Queen's Gallery and the Royal Mews. One of the best ways to tour the palace, see the Changing of the Guard, and experience a traditional afternoon tea, is on a 4.5 hour Buckingham Palace Tour Including Changing of the Guard Ceremony and Afternoon Tea. This tour is a very efficient way of seeing the highlights in a short period of time, and having a knowledgeable guide to explain the history makes the whole experience that much more enjoyable and relevant for first time visitors”

“The Royal Mews forms part of Buckingham Palace and houses the carriages and horses used by the Queen and the Royal Family for State and ceremonial occasions. A visit provides an opportunity to see the Royal Household in action. For much of the year the stables are also home to the 30 Windsor Grey and Cleveland Bay horses who serve the Queen on official duty when required. Visitors can also see the Gold State Coach which is used for Coronation and State Visits, weddings and the State Opening of Parliament. As they may be on duty, undergoing training or having a well-deserved rest away from London, the horses are not always on view.”

“This is a members-only library, but they have free guided tours for the public a few evenings a month. I owe my theatre directing career to it, because I do my research there. It was founded in 1841 and has over 1 million books. The science and miscellaneous section has some funky subdivisions like a surprisingly large selection of flagellation books. It has a ridiculous roll call of famous members: Dickens, Pinter, Kipling, E.M. Forster. I’ve seen Tom Stoppard, Andrew Marr, and Simon Callow there. You’ll come across books donated by Bram Stoker and Forster, and if you’re a member, you can check them out.”
