“One of the best place for eating sea food. The waiters are rude, service is poor, you will be waiting for a long time for a table. Yet, food is out of this world. ”

“The newly opened food court on the 7th floor has some of Lisbon's best chefs -- the view is nicer and it's less busy than the Timeout Market (Mercado da Ribeira) and there is even our favourite ice cream place Nannarella!”

“Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) used to be the location of the royal palace, until it was destroyed in 1755 by the Great Earthquake. The royal family moved to another residence in the district of Belem, and the new arcaded buildings became the entry port of the city. Its north side hosts a triumphal arch and one of the city's legendary cafes, Café Martinho da Arcada, a favourite for writers Fernando Pessoa, Almeida Garrett and Eça de Queiroz. The centre of the square boasts the statue of King José I, which is 14 meters high”

“Chapitô is a circus school that's actually become better known for its restaurant and bar. It has a very inviting terrace with fantastic city views, where you're served a menu of contemporary Portuguese cuisine. The more formal and romantic interior dining area has even better views. Downstairs is the bar ("Bartô"), which opens at night, often staging alternative theater and live music performances. Our recommendation is to go there on Tuesdays, when they have Live Fado Music!”

“Sea Me has super fresh, delicious fish cooked both traditionally (grilled with salt and vegetables) and in a contemporary way (try the sardine or the robalo sushi, their incredible!) It’s a little pricier, but super high quality. You’ll find half the tables full is locals and half tourists. Make sure to reserve a table. Kitchen is open until 1 am Friday and Saturday. ”

“Another ultra-cool rooftop space opens in Lisbon. This time in Martim Moniz with extraordinary views of Lisbon, from São Jorge Castle and Mouraria, to the viewpoints of Graça and Senhora do Monte. Topo is sure to become the classic spot for after-work drinks, sunset dinners and evening cocktails.”

“This is the bakery that brought bolo-rei (a crowned-shaped cake decorated with dried fruit that is usually eaten around Christmas) to Portugal and it still uses the same recipe as in 1829, the year it opened. Six generations later, Confeitaria Nacional is still run by the same family, though there have been some modernisations. In the summer months, it usually organises meals and cruises on a boat/restaurant with a view on the Tagus River.”

“Bica do Sapato. Standing right on the dock at the Santa Apolonia cruise port, and in front of Santa Apolonia train station this flashy and funky venue has a well-known investor behind it, Hollywood actor John Malkovich. The menu here is international, but also celebrated Portuguese culinary tradition with dishes like braised turbot with spinach and clams garnished with coriander. Needless to say, the wine list complements the excellent choice of gastronomy. Definitively a go. Av. Infante Dom Henrique Armazém B, Cais da Pedra, Santa Apolónia, 1900-436 Lisbon tel +351 21 881 0320.”

“At the beginning of the Nineteenth Century, in Belém, next to Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (the Heironymite Monastery) there was a sugar cane refinery attached to a small general store. As a result of the 1820 liberal revolution, all convents and monasteries in Portugal were shut down in 1834, the clergy and labourers expelled. In an attempt at survival, someone from the monastery offered sweet pastries for sale in the shop; pastries that rapidly became known as ‘Pastéis de Belém’. At that period the area of Belém was considered far from the city of Lisbon and mainly accessed by steam-boats. At the same time, the grandeur of the monastery and the Torre de Belém (the Belém Tower) attracted visitors who soon grew used to savouring the delicious pastries originated in the monastery. In 1837, the baking of the “Pastéis de Belém”began in the buildings attached to the refinery, following the ancient ‘secret recipe` from the monastery. Passed on and known exclusively to the master confectioners who hand-crafted the pastries in the ‘secret room’, this recipe remained unchanged to the present day. In fact, the only true ‘Pasteis de Belém’ contrive, by means of a scrupulous selection of ingredients, to offer even today the flavour of the time-honoured Portuguese sweetmaking.”

“Yes, the ones from Pasteis de Belém are the original ones, and yes, they are delicious! But I must say that the ones served in Manteigaria are equally worth it! ”

“ Brick Cafe is only 140 m from hotel. The menu is a bit small, but reasonably priced. Brick Cafe is supposed to be a nice place with nice food and coffee, nice decorations and prices weren't that high. The place is rather small, very cozy and friendly. ”
