Situated only 10 minutes from J40 of the M6 we are perfectly placed to explore the Lake District whether it be to go walking or maybe to enjoy the superb fly fishing on offer or maybe you are here for one of the wedding venues - Askham Hall, Knipe Hall etc, are all within reach. Clifton itself is a small village which is infamous for being the last battle on English soil at Clifton Moor the Skirmish took place between forces of the United Kingdom Hanoverian government and Jacobite rebels on Wednesday 18 December 1745 indeed some of the victims of battle are buried in the local churchyard. Latterly the village is now more famous for its Inn voted The Cumbria Pub of The Year 2017 is The George & Dragon a gastro fine food destination pub selling local real ales with a great reputation for it's menu which is reared and grown on it's own estate where possible. Should you wish to eat with them booking is advisable on weekends. Further afield there is the beautiful village of Askham which is only 3 miles from Clifton and has 2 great pubs - The Punchbowl Inn and The Queens Head which are both great places to eat and drink, indeed just behind the Queens is the wonderful Askham open air swimming pool/lido, with a full size pool and a toddler pool plus ample lawns to sunbath on, it is open during the summer months and has a lifeguard on duty at all times. There are so many things to mention locally such as the Abbott Lodge Jersey Ice Cream farm which is only a mile away, they have their own herd of Jersey cattle and make all of the ice cream on site with lots of flavours to choose from, half a mile further on and you have the Bird of Prey Centre, just past that you have Lowther Castle with it's award winning gardens and tea room, not forgetting Lowther Country Fair every August and also in the grounds each year is hosted The Kendal Calling Festival a superb event. Lilac Barn is perfectly placed for getting to the Lake District, only a 10 minute drive to Pooley Bridge and Ullswater arguably the most beautiful of the lakes, a ride on the daily ferry is recommended, and within easy reach is Penrith, Keswick, Kendal, Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere etc. If you are an angler then the Lake District is a magically beautiful region of high peaks, open fells, lakes and sparkling rivers that offers some tremendous fishing amidst scenery that is both spectacular and intimate. Those seeking quieter places can also find far less frequented areas of Cumbria with unique qualities of their own such as the Eden Valley where you will find the rivers Eden and arguably the finest brown trout river in the country - the river Lowther which is only a short distance from Lilac Barn.
