Food scene
Want a taste of a SF locally based coffee house? GO TO PHILLZ! Everytime my dad comes to visit this is the place we go. The service is super and the pour over coffee even better.

Nature and parks
San Mateo Central Park is a very large park on the south side of downtown San Mateo (a good 30 minute walk). If you have kids there is a nice rubber padded playground, a rose garden, a japanese garden, tennis courts, picnic tables with BBQ spaces and lots of green space. During the colder months, the baseball diamond is has an outdoor skating rink. Also it's only a few minutes from all the shops and restaurants of the San Mateo downtown.
