Háifoss is one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls and is recognized for both its height and volume. Meaning “high falls”, this waterfall plummets 122 meters into a gaping canyon alongside its sister waterfall, Granni, which means “the neighbor”. Both waterfalls come from branches of the Fossá river and join the Þjórsá, the longest river in Iceland. These waterfalls are especially impressive during the Spring and early Summer months; during this time the snowmelt that feeds the Fossá reaches its greatest volume, and the waterfalls cascade into the canyon with a roaring intensity that echoes off the canyon walls.

A beautiful double waterfall in the Thjorsá Valley The falls are named after the surrounding area of Hjalp, which means “help”. Travelers along the harsh Sprengisandur Route found this well-vegetated area to be one of great aid and recovery for their horses after a difficult crossing through the interior highlands. Volcanic ash can be found scattered throughout the entire valley, just one of many prominent signs of the eruptions of Mt. Hekla.
