Mountain Bike Tracks

Here is a selection of local mountain bike tracks that are within biking distance or a short drive from town.
A favourite of Barry's. Easily accessible from Northlake by following the river to the Albert Town bridge, cross the bridge and head to the back corner of the camp ground. An intermediate trail that is easily managed by novice riders, this track has a bit of everything - smooth, banked corners, a little downhill in the forest, a gentle climb back up and a fast finish back to the camp ground car park. If you don't feel confident to tackle the trickier section through the forest, just cut over to the exit track which runs parallel a few metres away.

This is a must do for any MTB'er staying in Northlake. The loop officially starts down by the Clutha river at the bottom of Outlet Road, but I always start at the corner of Hikuwai Reserve on Aubury Road. There is a pedestrian access over a cattle stop (funny cos there are no cattle!) and follow the signs saying 'Hikuwai Loop'. This one is suitable for anyone and you can choose to shorten the loop at the seat at the top of the hill where the loop crosses on the way down and the way up. A nice variety of single track riding with some fast, flat, smooth sections along with a manageable descent to the river. The return from the river is a gentle uphill mostly through bush until you reach the seat, then you make your way back down to the river through a variety of terrain. The bottom corner here joins the Wanaka Outlet Track so you can choose to complete the loop circuit or explore the river track in either direction. Allow an hour return, but my PB is 43 minutes!

A lovely family friendly ride alongside the Hawea River all the way to Lake Hawea. The Lake Hawea pub is a great spot to stop for lunch and some liquid refreshments before heading back home on the slightly downhill return. A great day trip.
