Food scene

This restaurant is very near the apartment, just 3 minutes down the street, and offers excellent lunch menus as well as a very reasonably priced menu in the evening. The ingredients are local and often ecological and the staff speak several languages and are very friendly. It has been a go-to place for my family for the last three years.

I first discovered Big Al's about 10 years ago when he had a very small restaurant near the beach in Sitges. His "vocation": get the best meat from farmers in the nearby mountains, have a brioche bread specially made in a local bakery, and make the best American-style burgers in Spain. Now he has a place in Barcelona and this bigger restaurant in Sitges. Craft beers on tap. You can even get a Dr Pepper or Cherry Coke if that's your thing (not to mention quesadillas, nachos, pulled pork and other American specialties). And the burgers are still of exceptional quality. Another go-to for us and the kids in Sitges. If you want to meet the man himself, he seems to be there in the evenings more than at lunch-time and is very nice.

Located in a little park hidden in the old city center, and now run by the owners of one of Sitges' best known tapas bars, this place offers a beautiful setting as well as innovative food creations. Sometimes there are concerts on Sunday mornings in the park, and if you reserve a table a one o'clock you can just catch the end of a concert while starting your meal. The original el Cable bar has won several awards for its tapas creations in the annual Sitges tapas contest, and these creations are also available here. My recommendation: accompany your meal with a bottle of Cava (Catalan sparkling wine, preferably brut) for an unforgettable foodie experience.

A typical Spanish "covered market" i.e. inside a building with different stalls selling fresh produce, spices, meat, fish, fruit, nuts, bread and pastry, everything that makes a food-lovers heart beat faster. It is open on Monday and Saturday mornings, as well as Tuesday through Friday mornings and afternoons and only a ten-minute walk from the apartment. If you enjoy cooking or even just looking at the mouth-watering display of a huge variety of fresh ingredients, this is a must-see.

metro vs Taxi in Barcelona

A family ticket for 8 trips is 10 Euro. This ticket can be used by a group of people, one trip per person. So for a family of 4 that's 5 Euros per trip. Buses are included and also cover interesting routes. Going most anywhere by taxi in Barcelona is not more than 10 Euros, often 8 Euros. However, there is a serious danger of pickpockets on metros and buses. Pay attention when using public transport, don't carry valuables. My advice: with three people every car is ok, with 4 or 5 people you'll have to wait for that bigger cab, but in many cases it's faster and safer and not much more expensive
