The new pier complex is located where the original Pleasure Pier stood from 1943 until 1961, when it was destroyed by Hurricane Carla. The original Pleasure Pier featured rides, an arcade, an aquarium, concessions, a large ball room, named the Marine Ballroom, and fishing at the end of the pier. It was also the site of the USS Flagship Hotel, an over-the-water hotel built in 1965 that was demolished after Hurricane Ike in 2008. Before the renovation there had been almost no maintenance in over 70 years, resulting in the pier having exposed reinforcing steel with accelerated corrosion and concrete spalling at piles, beams, joists, and reflective overhead flat plates. Because of this, extensive structural concrete restoration was needed. Repairs were eventually completed using shotcrete struck and finished in alignment with pre-existing materials making up the pier. The pier was a filming location for the 2021 comedy-drama Red Rocket.

Buffalo Bayou is an entire 52-mile waterway that starts in Katy, Texas, and winds its way to Houston's River Oaks area. The 10-mile stretch from Shepherd Drive to the Port of Houston Turning Basin, Buffalo Bayou Park, is a popular place for outdoor recreation. There are a number of attractions within the 160-acre Buffalo Bayou Park, including a skateboarding park, a nature-inspired playground and picnic pavilion, a tributary, a dog park and the Houston Police Officers' Memorial. The park is also home to fascinating restored elements, such as The Water Works building, made from a 4-acre abandoned city water system. Today, it's a popular hub for outdoor events and performances as well as food trucks. It's also home to public restrooms and bike rental facilities. You'll also find the Cistern there: Houston's first underground drinking-water reservoir that's been converted into a distinctive public space. Not only is the park great for outdoor activities, it's also a great place for stunning photo-ops of the Houston skyline, according to recent visitors. Buffalo Bayou Park and its attractions are open every day from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., but non-lighted areas are only open from dawn to dusk. Certain attractions, like the Cistern, have shorter hours than the park itself.

A museum for the little ones. Exhibits include the Tot*Spot, for kids up to 24 months old, which is complete with a train table and a ball and pillow pit. Older kids will enjoy exhibits like Invention Convention, a mini engineering workshop, or EcoStation, an indoor/outdoor area where kids can do everything from observe turtles and other animals in the pond to leaf rubbings. Then there's the outdoor FlowWorks interactive exhibit where kids can play water games and stand in the middle of an 18-foor cauldron (perfect for those hot summer days). Meanwhile, Kidtropolis is a mini-city for kids, run by kids that mimics a real city. Children can get a job, receive a paycheck, sit on the city council, go grocery shopping and more. SECRET Spy Game is an espionage-themed interactive experience designed to sharpen problem-solving skills. Most travelers say the facility is less museum and more play place, but that makes it all the more engaging for kids. You'll find the Children's Museum Houston just northeast of Hermann Park. It's open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursday). Entrance fees are waived every Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. The museum is one of the attractions accessible to CityPASS holders. Paid and street parking are available in the vicinity of the museum, which can also be reached via the METRORail and METROBus.

The Bishop's Palace, the stone and steel mansion of Walter Gresham, rises like a beacon in Galveston's East End Historic District. The three-story home was designed by Nicholas Clayton, the island's premier Victorian-era architect, and is considered one of the most significant Victorian residences in the nation. Gresham, a steel and railroad tycoon, commissioned the home for he and his family in the 1880s. It was completed in 1892 and survived the great Galveston hurricane of 1900 intact. The home was monumental for its time. Clayton expanded on the traditional Chateauesque-Victorian style using irregular-shaped stones, Tudor arches with carvings of animals, people and other things. The designer also used a combination of simple geometric forms in bold masses to create dramatic effect. The opulent interior has been restored to how it would have looked during the Gresham's ownership. A Civil War veteran, Gresham moved to Galveston from his native Virginia following the war. There he and his wife Josephine raised nine children. He was founder of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad. He also served in the Texas Legislature. Built of stone and steel for the railroad magnate Walter Gresham and his family, this famous house was designed by Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier Victorian-era architect. The Bishop’s Palace is recognized as one of America’s finest examples of Victorian exuberance and Gilded-Age extravagance.
