The Park: Such a gorgeous place to just come see. Walk or picnic down by the creek, go for a hike, or just drive through the steep canyon and watch the rock climbers scale the rock on either side of you! Hike: Rattle snake Gulch trail - 3.6 miles, moderately challenging, AMAZING views of the continental divide. An iconic front range hike! Note: VERY CROWDED ON WEEKENDS DURING SUMMER - PARK WILL LIKELY FILL BY 11AM!! Very limited parking. Go on weekdays or go early.

Best for hiking. Walker Ranch Loop, 7.9 miles, moderate. Want to get away from the crowds? This trail is a bit off the beaten path and you won’t be walking in a throng. Crosses South Boulder Creek twice in a big loop, with lots of views of the back side of Eldorado Canyon, and one or two burn areas that are fascinating to walk through!

*Golden Gate Canyon State Park (40ish min drive, entrance fee required)- Head to the visitor’s center and grab a map. The hiking possibilities are endless and range from easy and short to long and very difficult. It’s worth driving out to Panorama Point if you have the time, and the 3.5 mile loop from that parking area on the north side of Gap road is moderate and simply stunning (Mule deer to Racoon trail loop).

*Dowdy Draw Trailhead (fee required to park) - gorgeous views of the foothills, see map when you get there and choose a loop that looks fun! They’re all great! It's right on the way to Eldorado Canyon State Park so it's a nice backup option if Eldorado Canyon State Park is full. Drive all the way down into the canyon for a quick peek (don't blink) into the unique town? village? settlement? that is the locale of Eldorado Springs. South Mesa Trailhead across the street is great too.

Parking fee required. Great option if Eldorado Canyon State Park is full as you drive right past it on the way - or just in its own right, it's gorgeous. Some small picnic areas at the start, with a small creek you can walk down to and enjoy near the start. Great hiking too. Unbeatable views of the flatirons.

What's a 14er?

14ers are mountains that are about 14,000 feet in elevation and are the tallest mountains in the Colorado rockies. In Colorado, there are 58 14ers. Some are more technical and require mountaineering skills and equipment. Others are more accessible. You can seasonally drive up two of them - Pikes Peak and Mount Evans. These drives are not, however, for the faint of heart!

Hiking in Colorado? READ THIS FIRST

Afternoon thunderstorms can be life-threatening if you're on a hike above treeline! If you are going to hike something very high (a 13er or 14er that goes above tree line, for example), you want to make sure you are back below treeline by 1:00 or so (always keeping an eye on the skies) at the latest to avoid being caught being the highest thing around during a lightning strike. This means you begin extremely early if you have any hopes of summiting (Think 4am/5am/6am start). If you're a new hiker, go with an experienced hiker and be safe!
