Villages / Places

There are many places and sightseeings all around Messara area ideal for a great deal of visitors that want to discover real authentic local life. With this short guide Having Kalamaki as a base I propose some places that I personally feel that is worth visiting. Of course extra small tips will be given after communication. Enjoy your holidays at full!
Kalamaki is a tourist destination in southern Crete that has a calm beauty and it does meet the needs of its summer visitors with its lovely beach, tavernas, hotels, rooms and apartments for rent. Kalamaki has no history. there was no village here before 1970. You won’t see any traditional houses or specific architectural style here, as opposed to neighbouring Kamilari, where everything testifies to the long history of the village. Kalamaki is built along the great beach of Messara Bay, the largest beach in southern Crete. The resort is expanding rapidly and has already spread out over the nearby hills, in a landscape strongly reminiscent of African desert. The central position of Kalamaki in southern Crete gives it the great advantage of offering quick and easy access to many tourist spots and archaeological sites, such as Matala, Kommos, Phaistos, Agia Galini and many other places. In just a few minutes’ drive you can visit traditional villages in the Messara Plain or enjoy a dip off one of the many lovely beaches of southern Crete. Kalamaki hasn’t got the nightlife and bustle of neighbouring Matala, but it is quite busy and touristy. It’s a place for young people and families who want to relax and enjoy swimming in the Libyan Sea, gazing out at the Paximadi Islands. Nobody can feel crowded on the large beach of Kalamaki. Children can play safely, while adults can enjoy the spectacular sunsets. Kalamaki is also ideal for people who want to visit the famous nearby tourist resorts such as Matala and Agia Galini, or those who would like to combine fun and history. There are major archaeological sites in the area (Phaistos, Agia Triada, Gortys), while the scenery of the Bay of Mesara will satisfy even the hardest to please.

Matala has a lot of history about the hippies that used to live there. It is ideal for a drink, to taste some Greek specialities and walk around the shops for souvenirs. The beach is quite organized and the sea is quite deep but will less rocks in compare with other near places. Tip: when there is a lot of wind across all the west beaches (Kalamaki, Komos, Kokkinos pirgos, etc.) at Matala usually it is quite less windy because of the 2 mountains that protect the area, so there are more possibilities that you will be able to swim.

It is a touristic place that is chosen for eating and having a drink. It has also a beach where you can swim. Tip: you should pay attention on the road because there are a lot of turns.

One of the biggest towns of the area where you can find services, banks and big market. It would worth more if you visit it on Saturday morning that there is a flea market (the locals call it "pazari") on the main road with a wide range of products. Tip: If you go to "pazari" don't miss to taste "kanelada" a local drink made with cinammon flavor and a lot of ice.

Beaches

Τhis beach is popular among the locals and the tourists because it is a very big area across the sea that starts from Kalamaki and ends at the hill before Matalla. There are different spots that you may try with more or less rocks and sand. At the first area right after Kalamaki there are also some trees and a camping area. Then a big nude friendly area starts that ends before the archeological sight. Only at the end of komos there is a small Taverna and organized facilities. Tip:if you have a car you may go at a Taverna that is on the hill with great view (just above the organized area).

This is a hidden beautiful beach that can be reached by feet after walking for about 20 minutes. There are 2 paths that start from Matalla(you may ask locals). You walk uphill and then downhill, slippers are not recommended and a hat and a bottle of water is a must during you are on the trail. You will enjoy very nice view all around area. At the beach there aren't umbrellas and facilities. Still there is a small kantine that is quite expensive. It has also a more rocky area that is nude friendly. Tips: 1_if you pay attention around you will notice that there is grey clay "argilos" sand/dust that you may use at your skin for a quick & free skinspa😉. 2_If you do not want to walk, there are some locals from Matalla that use their boats to transfer any people by the sea (ask at local stores for more info).

This is a long beach that the sea inside has sand not rocks, something rare in the area. Also, it is not a deep sea, so it is ideal for families with kids. It has an organized area and also much place to set your own umbrella. Tip: You may have dinner in the tavern "kokkinos pirgos" or drink your beer on one of the seaside cafes enjoying the sunset.
