We love the Dockyard. Tickets can be pricey so look out for special deals online. Fascinating tours of Henry VIII's flagship, The Mary Rose, Nelson's HMS Victory and the iron clad warship, HMS Warrior. Take a harbour tour around the dockyard, stop off at Gunwharf Quays for some shopping and lunch. Kids will love Action Stations, where there is Laser Quest and helicopter simulators.

The kids love running through the narrow paths and the views across the surrounding farmland are lovely. There is an inspirational veg patch and a nice cafe and events in the summer such as jazz on the lawn make for a worthwhile visit.

Great for walks and cycling. Kids playgrounds at top and bottom of the hill. Cafe and shop. Climb the nearby Butser Hill for the most amazing views. (You can also drive up there if you don't fancy the climb!) Great for kite flying.

The Harrow Inn is a real "spit and sawdust" pub. Known for miles around, it's great for a pint or try their soup or quiche. With two small bars and seating outside it's a great stop if you're enjoying one of the many walks in the area.

Huge selection of bars and restaurants all set on the harbourside overlooking Portsmouth Harbour. Also has a cinema and bowling and lots of great shops! With the Spinnaker Tower dominating over head it's a great place for an evening out.

Paulton's Park, which includes Peppa Pig World, is a must if you have under 8s (and they're adding rides all the time to appeal to those slightly older too) My kids have loved it since they were tiny. Loads of rides, usually the queues are not bad at all, fab restaurant or take a picnic. They've just opened a new dinosaur land with several new rides. It is a great day out! Their Christmas Wonderland is highly recommended if you're staying at weekends in November and December but booking is essential.
